“Why am I seeing this ad?” Meta Updates Ads Transparency Measures

To make it easier to find the ads controls, users can now access Ads Preferences from additional pages in the “Why am I seeing this as?” tool.?

Meta has announced a new set of measures aimed at increasing the transparency of ads on its platform. The move is part of the social media giant's ongoing efforts to provide users with more control over the content they see and engage with. This is the latest update to the “Why am I seeing this ad?” tool.

Following the recent update, the “Why am I seeing this ad?” tool on Facebook will include:

  • Summarised information about user activity both on and off the platform including likes on friends posts, or interactions with websites, will be used to shape the ads that are seen.?
  • New illustrations explaining how the machine learning model picks which ads are shown to users.
  • Easily accessible ads controls. Users will now be able to access Ads Preferences from additional pages in the “Why am I seeing this as?” tool.?

What do the changes mean for advertisers??

Meta believes that these changes will help users better understand the data behind the ads they see and enable them to make more informed decisions about the content they engage with.

Meta's efforts to enhance transparency on its platform came amid growing concerns about the role of social media in shaping public opinion, and the potential misuse of personal data. There has been intense scrutiny in recent years over the handling of user data, the spread of disinformation and hate speech, and its role in shaping public discourse.

Committed to utilising user data responsibly?

Meta are committed to using the machine learning models responsibly. They have established a third-party fact-checking program, and introduced the use of artificial intelligence to detect and remove fake accounts and fraudulent content. These new and improved tools will enable users to better control their privacy settings. The changes made to “Why am I seeing this ad?” reflect the feedback received by Meta and have the overall goal of total transparency to users. Meta have stated these will continue to improve their ads transparency offerings to provide users with a better understanding of how they use data and technology to show ads.
