1 年Once again, you hit the nail on the head! I am so enlightened and blessed by you both. . ."thank you!" is not enough to express how grateful I am for living in that brave space. I wanted to mention that there is another reason for micromanagement. It's a way to deflect. The micromanager doesn't want attention brought to the fact that they have been negligent, so they use their direct reports as scapegoats. Any failure is blamed on them, since they didn't and can't produce according to the ever-changing list of tasks the micromanager keeps adding. I've experienced this behavior twice now. I have been in higher ed since the mid-90's, and this kind of behavior and attitude is so rampant it's been normalized and is expected and tolerated. Very sad. Keep being our champions! We need you, and you need us. We're behind you!

1 年Micromanagement is a sign of an insecure boss that fails to trust his team to do what they were hired to do. Micromanagement is necessary when there are KPIs that are under performing for the business. Having a clear business strategy is key and making mistakes is inevitable however being nimble and readjusting is key when a plan is not up to par with management's objectives. It is key for middle management to push back on lofty goals that are destructive to a teams trust and mental health. This is why I created Waterview Marketing.

1 年This was great! I haven't looked at it from this perspective even though it is one of my "pet peeves"

1 年Thank you for this. So validating! I was being micromanaged - while I increased revenue (and did not receive a performance review for 2 years). My only consolation is the revenue (an no management letter!) shows on the audited financial statements - and no racist can take that away from me.
