Why All Supplements Are Not The Same
In an ideal world, we would obtain all the nutrients our bodies need to remain healthy from the food we eat. Unfortunately, due to factors such as nutrient-depleted soil, long transportation distances, and storage times, even fresh, natural plant foods may not contain the same level of nutrients as they did in the past. Additionally, individual circumstances such as stress, gut health issues, and environmental toxins can increase our need for certain nutrients.
?
This is where supplements can play a role in maintaining wellness. Health practitioners may recommend specific supplements to help correct imbalances in your body and support optimal health. However, not all supplements are created equal. Let's explore why.
?
Balance is Key
?
Vitamins and minerals often work in combination with one another, and taking one specific nutrient may naturally increase your need for another. This is why the correct balance of nutrients in a supplement is crucial. The supplements you find at the supermarket or chemist may contain different levels of nutrients compared to those recommended by your practitioner.
?
Different Forms of Nutrients
?
Nutrients can exist in various forms within supplements. For example, calcium may be present as calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, while magnesium can be in the form of oxide, citrate, or malate. The form of the nutrient determines how easily your body can absorb and use it. Your practitioner will know which form is most suitable for your specific needs.

Read Those Labels
?
Supplements don't just contain nutrients; they also include excipients that help the powder flow through the capsule machine or make the tablet stick together. Reputable manufacturers use minimal excipients made from natural substances that won't cause allergic reactions or interfere with nutrient absorption. Be wary of supplements containing GMO ingredients, artificial colours, sweeteners, and flavourings.
?
Purity Matters
?
Just like food, supplements can vary in purity. Fish oil, for example, should be rigorously screened for pollutants such as PCBs and heavy metals. Herbs and other plant ingredients should also be checked for contaminants and obtained from organic growers. Reputable supplement companies carry out regular checks to ensure the quality and purity of their products.

Does it Contain What it Says?
?
Supplement manufacturers need to constantly test and check every batch to ensure their suppliers are providing the ingredients they claim. While it may be cheaper to skip this step, it can lead to inferior quality products. Practitioners know which businesses are diligent in their testing and quality control processes.
?
In conclusion, while it may be tempting to opt for cheaper supplements from the supermarket, health store or chemist, it's essential to remember that not all supplements are created equal. The specific balance of nutrients, the form in which they exist, the purity of the ingredients, and the quality control processes all play a vital role in determining the effectiveness of a supplement.
?
As a nutritional therapist I have the knowledge and expertise to recommend supplements that are tailored to your individual needs and sourced from reputable manufacturers. So, the next time you're considering purchasing supplements, remember that investing in high-quality products recommended by your practitioner is an investment in your health and well-being. Some of the best quality products are not any more in cost than their inferior competitors so don’t be put off by the thought of having to spend an arm and a leg on supplements as that’s not necessarily the case. One of my favourite B complex products is less than £9 for a month’s supply!
