Why an All-Girls Education?

As the Principal of Penrhos College , I often get asked, "Why an all-girls education? Should I choose a single-sex school for my child?" My answer is always that it depends on the student and what is best for them as an individual. However, as a Principal of an all-girls school, I can speak to the unique value I see in our environment.

At Penrhos, the benefits of our girls-only environment are evident every day in the way our students act, think, and achieve. We are committed to empowering our girls*, encouraging them to use their voices, speak up, challenge ideas respectfully, stand up for others, and make a positive difference.

The environment at a girls’ school is designed to support all facets of a girl’s development. At Penrhos, this vision is embodied in our four commitments: No ceilings; make your own adventure; find the fun; and be a force for good

There is significant research demonstrating the positive effects a girls-only education can have across several key themes. The International Coalition of Girls' Schools has the following facts on their website:

1. Greater Cultural Competency

2. Stronger Community Involvement

3. Increased Civic & Political Engagement

4. Fostering Her Voice

5. Develops Leadership Skills

6. Builds Self-Confidence

7. Dedicated to How Girls Learn

8. Inspirational Environment

9. Academic Achievement

10. Fosters Increased Interest & Confidence in STEM

11. Excellent Mentoring

12. Free From Stereotypes

13. Higher Aspirations

14. Prepares Girls for the Real World

I strongly value the impact on Confidence, Self-Image, and Finding Her Voice as a girls' school eliminates inequality, sexism, or misogyny. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to overcome social and cultural gender biases. Studies consistently show that single-sex environments build confidence and self-worth in women and girls, significantly impacting their educational journeys. Girls at single-sex schools are encouraged to speak up in class, take healthy risks with their learning, including traditionally ‘male-dominated’ subjects, ask questions, and share their views.

What About Boys?

Girls’ schools aim to develop the confidence and self-esteem of students in all areas, including how they interact and build relationships with the opposite sex. While the ‘real world’ is mixed-gender, it is also a world where women are not always considered equal. We believe we best prepare our students for success by providing a tailored environment that supports them in feeling confident, secure, and ambitious. We also facilitate regular, positive, and constructive interactions with their male peers.

At Penrhos, we have a strong relationship with our brother school, Wesley College, Perth This relationship provides students with opportunities to engage meaningfully with their male peers on academic and social issues. Collaboration days, quiz nights, the collaborative delivery of curriculum, and regular social gatherings are just some of the ways we ensure meaningful interactions. We also work with other boys’ schools, including throughout our Junior School, to facilitate opportunities for children to play and learn together.

Ultimately, the benefits of a girls-only education at Penrhos extend far beyond academic success. Our commitment to empowering students, fostering respectful dialogue, and encouraging leadership helps shape confident, capable young women ready to make a positive impact in the world. If you’re pondering whether a single-sex education might be the right choice for your child, consider the unique opportunities that such an environment can offer. At Penrhos, we are dedicated to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.
