Why AI is your Antidote to Work

Why AI is your Antidote to Work

We’re currently experiencing change at the fastest rate in human history. But the thing is, it’s also the slowest that we’ll experience for the rest of our lives. And when we look back, one of the things that has changed the most has been work.

We may not always love it, but work plays a massive part in our lives. I mean, we spend more than a third of our time doing it. And so, like any relationship, we have our criteria - The things we need or want to get out of it so that we’re happy.?

According to HP’s Work Relationship Index, a healthy relationship with work is made up of six things:

  • Fulfilment: Purpose, meaning and empowerment at work
  • Leadership: Empathy and emotional connection from those in charge
  • People-centricity: Decision-making with people at the heart
  • Skills: Confidence-building by tapping into the enthusiasm employees have for learning new skills
  • Tools: The right technology to drive employee engagement
  • Workspace: Flexibility and trust in where employees work, enabled by seamless transitions

So, we know the ingredients to have a healthy relationship with work. But does the recipe stack up?

Well, these days, it’s a pretty unhealthy one.

More than three quarters of Australian knowledge workers report having an unhealthy relationship with work

An unhealthy relationship with work impacts us beyond the workplace. The main thing it affects is our physical health, which manifests as eating unhealthy food, not getting enough sleep, and gaining weight. Another big one is our mental wellbeing, causing feelings of low self-esteem, isolation, and not being good enough. And it seeps into our personal relationships too, affecting our ability to be the romantic partner, friend, or parents that we want to be.?

So, what do we do about it?

As much as there’s this fear-driven rhetoric about the robots coming to take our jobs, it turns out that AI could actually be the answer.

In a survey of more than 15,000 workers worldwide, the majority of respondents felt that AI could improve their relationship with work. How? AI gives us the opportunity to offload those repetitive and boring tasks, which are often fiddly, time-consuming, and don’t add all too much value. And by freeing up time and making things easier, it makes our work more interesting, more enjoyable, and ultimately more fulfilling.

Don’t believe me? Take something as simple as the calculator. When the calculator first came about, all the headlines at the time read that if you were an accountant, you’d better find a new job. Apparently, if we all had calculators, we wouldn’t need accountants anymore. Of course, things didn’t play out that way. We still have accountants, it’s just that they don’t spend their time manually adding up numbers. Instead, they have a tool at their disposal that helps them do their job better, faster, and frees up time to do more value-adding work.?

If you’re feeling a little out of the loop when it comes to AI, then now is the time to get on top of it, because not only is it going to help future-proof your career but it will help improve your relationship with work. Otherwise, it might be time to swipe left.

Great article Ben! You should look at the AI Index Report by Stanford. It found that 70% of companies using AI report higher job satisfaction due to the reduction of mundane tasks. Also, companies that use AI to handle routine tasks see their employees focusing on more creative, strategic work, leading to higher job satisfaction and a 25% increase in staff retention rates compared to those that are slow to adopt AI.
