Why AI is a strategic tool—not a threat ?

By now it’s clear that AI is only going to continue transforming the way we work, live, and interact.

If you’re a product manager (PM) or work at a product-led organization, you're probably thinking about how this technology will shape how you build, innovate, and bring products to market. And instead of seeing AI as a threat (as many PMs still do), it's important to recognize that it's actually a highly strategic tool that you can—and should—learn to put to work for you.

In this week's edition of The Product-Led Hub, we're sharing brand new resources to help you up your AI game and make this technology an invaluable part of your PM arsenal.

?? AI for Product Management Course

The AI for Product Management Course explores AI’s place in product management—including how to leverage AI throughout the development life cycle, best practices for building AI-powered features, and why product managers should view AI as a strategic tool, not a threat.

In a recent study of more than 1,200 businesses, Pendo and Product Collective found that 44% of company leaders rank AI and machine learning skills as most needed to achieve business goals, while just 19% of individual contributors agree. ?? This captures the current state of AI in business: While leadership is bullish on AI, the individuals who are most likely to utilize this technology don’t necessarily share this feeling.?

And this notion is one of the primary reasons Pendo, Google Cloud , and Mind the Product set out to create the AI for Product Management Course.

?? The playbook for AI-enhanced product management

As creatives who build with an eye towards strengthening the business, PMs are always looking for ways to do more, better. But with new products geared toward them launching by the week, each one promising to fundamentally transform their space, it’s easy for PMs to get cynical about how much technology will actually impact their work. Most of the apps and tools that generate buzz each month end up being just that—a flash in the pan, a hype machine, nothing more.

When AI exploded onto the business scene, however, something was different. The launch of ChatGPT and other large language model (LLM) platforms didn’t feel like empty hype, and there was a reason for this. According to a recent McKinsey report, the broad utility of generative AI can create value across a wide array of business use cases. In macro, they estimate GenAI will add between $2.6 and $4.4 trillion per year to the global economy. ?? Every business function will feel the impact in unique ways. And that includes PMs, for whom this transformative tech will be particularly empowering.

3 ways AI will make product managers more efficient ??

Even before AI took the business world by storm, the PM role was changing. What was once a role singularly focused on shipping features has evolved into a strategic, cross-functional role that’s critical to business growth. So how does AI fit into this evolution?

The goal of the modern product manager is to drive business outcomes. Ultimately, AI can enable PMs to achieve those outcomes faster and more effectively. AI tools can help product practitioners identify signals from noise in their data, provide insight into their product that was difficult—or impossible—to find on their own, and automate workflows to save them time.?

AI doesn’t mean the end of the product manager role—but it is going to change. ?? In the end, AI frees up product managers to deliver more value to customers. Here are three ways how.
