Why Acting Like A Rookie Salesperson Slows Down Your Job Search

Why Acting Like A Rookie Salesperson Slows Down Your Job Search

Most job seekers slow down their job search and lose opportunities when qualified because they act like a rookie salesperson ... and you're probably doing this too. Even executives, managers and experienced staff make similar rookie mistakes.

You don't mean to make these rookie slip-ups ... you're losing opportunities because you were taught to make these mistakes.

Here are some examples of how most job seekers make the mistakes of rookie salespeople:

  • No Plan:?Every experienced salesperson knows that you've got to have a sales plan to hit your goals. Rookie sales people either get lucky or get desperate. Job seekers who accelerate their search plan make sure they do enough of the right activities, to have a big enough pipeline, which ensures their success.
  • Acting Like You're The Only Qualified Candidate:?It's easy to think that you're the only qualified candidate with all the news about candidate shortages of bar/restaurant/retail, low wage, entry level, front line production, truck driver, and Doctor/nurse jobs. But those probably aren't the jobs you're looking for. For experienced staff, management and executive positions in 2023's job market, there are 70M+ job seekers competing for 9.9M advertised jobs. Employers expect 5-10 qualified applicants competing for each interview spot ... And the best job seeker wins.
  • Describing What You Can Do, Instead Of Understanding Employer's Needs:?Rookie salespeople make the mistake of pushing products and prices. Successful job seekers understand that employers hire the person they believe will solve their problems better than anyone else, helping the hiding manager get bonuses, raises and promotions.
  • Not Being Prepared:?Rookies make mistakes like relying publicly available information that give them no advantage over others, and that information is almost always obsolete (For job seekers, this means job descriptions, company websites, LinkedIn pages, and Google searches). Successful salespeople and job seekers know that they need to do more than their competitors to gain an edge and be prepared by understanding current needs of an individual hiring manager.
  • Try hard:?That's the excuse rookie salespeople give when they don't meet their goals. Successful salespeople and job seekers beat their goals. Successful job seekers don't make excuses, they do more to get job offers.
