Why Abandoning Your Creativity Makes You Less Productive

Why Abandoning Your Creativity Makes You Less Productive

When I was young, I assumed that creativity was only found in very specific areas. I couldn’t draw or paint like my mother could, and therefore I wasn’t creative.

Little did I know at the time, that creativity was seeping from every ounce of my being. It wasn’t long before I started realizing that almost everything I enjoyed – from writing, to coordinating swatches of paint for my home, to dance, to the way I expressed myself while out on an adventure – oozed creativity.

But still, the creative expression that most fulfilled me never took priority. I had a big contribution to leave on this planet, and as much as I enjoyed creative expression, I didn’t have time to prioritize it above the legacy I knew was mine to leave.

It wasn’t long before I started choosing work over creative activities. My schedule filled up with constant doing, and at the end of the day I was exhausted. Once I got into the routine of having so much to do, it wasn’t long before burnout took over. All that weighed on my shoulders prevented me from feeling refreshed, nourished or free.

Thankfully, that was 15 years ago and so much has changed. And looking back on that time, I wasn’t nearly as productive as I thought. The legacy I was trying to leave at the time was more of a pipedream that it was a reality. The lack of nourishment I felt inside of myself caused a mediocre dryness to eek out into my work.

The higher calling I knew I was meant for could never have been fulfilled from that place.

In my lifetime of research on humanity I’ve found that there’s a direct correlation between the legacy you’re meant to leave on this planet, and your ability to express yourself creativity. Even if your calling is scientific or mathematical, practical or rational, there is a creative way you’re meant to express it.

It seems as if taking the time to connect to your creativity will take away from your productivity. – but it’s actually just the opposite. I’ve seen CFO’s become more productive, innovators become focused and clear in their direction, and leaders of all kinds have more energy and get more done as a result of connecting to their creativity.

Here are 3 reasons why abandoning your creativity will actually make you less productive:

1. Creativity lives at the foundation of your life force.

You constantly have life force moving through you, however it’s up to you to choose to use it. You can allow it to remain stagnant and just keep you breathing, or you can connect to your life force and use it to find innovation and fullness in everything you do.

If you push down this life force, your work (and all you do) will become stagnant, dry, unfulfilling and mediocre. If you connect to this life force, you’ll discover the essence of creation in everything you do. The essence of creation will guide you, providing clear direction, a lot more energy, and an oomph to your step.

The more you honor your creativity, the more life force you’ll find to fuel you. The more life force you discover, the more your creativity will guide you in fulfilling the purpose you came to this planet for.

2. The key to amplifying your influence is power – because power IS creation.

Power is an energy that lies at the core of your essence. It is not found in things outside of you, but in accessing the life force inside of you. You already know that the more influence you have, the greater impact you can have with every step you take. Getting to a place of influence happens by learning to use the power that flows through you wisely.

The old versions of wielding (false) power are quickly dying. True power is the very force of creation itself. Abandoning the feeling you have when you yearn to come home to express yourself, means abandoning your calling. The influence you’re meant to have on the world requires you to listen to, trust in, and learn to work alongside creation. Creation is power. And power creates productivity that makes a lasting impact.

3. Productivity is found in flow, and flow is creative at its core.

It’s virtually impossible to get a lot done without finding a sense of flow. Without flow, your actions become dry, stagnant, and you have to work much harder to source the effort for them. Whatever it is you’re doing, hitting that sweet spot of flow makes it move much faster.

Flow and creativity are intrinsically linked. Like life force and power, they come from the same place – creation itself. Remembering and listening to your creative urges will bring forth flow, and flow will bring about productivity. And, unlike hustle, efforting, or pushing, the kind of productivity that comes from a flow space is nourishing and sustainable.

You’re not meant to live in a vacuum of hard work. You’re meant to live in a place of nourishment that makes hard work easy.
