Why 999 ?
It is the beginning of Champagne Webster's Timeline History.
King Hugh Capet gives the city and county of Melun to Bouchard the Venerable, Count of Vendome, Montoire and Lavardin, in 960 on the occasion of the marriage of the latter with the young Elizabeth Le Riche (Countess of Corbeil widow of Aymon dead during a pilgrimage to Rome). In 991, under the reign of Robert II of France, Eudes de Chartres, the count of Champagne, took Melun by bribing Viscount Gautier, lieutenant of Bouchard the Venerable. The castle of Melun being royal stronghold, Hugh Capet raised his vassals, Foulque Nerra count of Anjou son-in-law of Bouchard, and Richard I duke of Normandy. the Normans arrived with their army and a fleet. They managed to enter through a hidden door in the lower part of the rampart they had demolished and Melun was taken back after seven months of siege, Gautier and his wife, who had sold the city, were hanged. Eudes, vanquished, packed up. Historians date this Melun event as having occurred in 999, even if it was probably in 991.
Also because we are fed-up with bottles at 100€ sold 1 000€ or more in exclusive locations. A flacon at that price should be an exceptional wine made by exceptional people...
