As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible businesses I’ve had the privilege to work with throughout 2024—innovative teams, ambitious small enterprises, and the quiet achievers who keep the UK economy thriving. One thing that has stood out to me is how the businesses that truly thrived this year were those willing to embrace change. They didn’t just adopt tools or systems; they invested their time and effort into doing things differently—often challenging what felt familiar but wasn’t necessarily effective anymore.
At Flowbird, we’ve worked with companies at various stages of their journey. Some are still managing customer interactions on spreadsheets, others are struggling with disconnected systems, and a few are overwhelmed by processes that feel ingrained but no longer practical. The pattern is clear: the businesses willing to move away from these outdated methods are the ones building a foundation for lasting success.
Reflections on Small Businesses: The Backbone of the UK Economy
Small businesses are remarkable. They represent 99.2% of all businesses in the UK, employing over 16 million people and contributing immeasurably to the economy. Every day, these enterprises bring ideas to life, create jobs, and provide essential services to their communities.
But the challenges are significant. Nearly half of new businesses don’t make it past their third year. Often, this isn’t due to a lack of hard work or creativity, but because inefficiencies creep in—time lost chasing missed opportunities, juggling tasks manually, or working harder instead of smarter.
The businesses that have inspired me the most this year are the ones that took a step back to reassess. They asked the hard questions about how they were operating and embraced the opportunity to work differently. Their success isn’t just a testament to their courage but a reminder that evolution is essential for survival.
Familiar Isn’t Always Better
Change can be daunting. There’s comfort in sticking with what you know, even when it’s holding you back. I’ve seen teams relying on spreadsheets to manage their sales and customer relationships—familiar, yes, but also time-consuming and prone to error.
It’s not unlike how we used to navigate road trips. Not too long ago, we relied on printed maps or route instructions, folding and refolding paper to figure out the next turn. It got us there—eventually. But today, with sat nav apps that adjust in real-time, we wouldn’t dream of going back. The journey is smoother, quicker, and infinitely less stressful.
Running a business is no different. Outdated methods might feel comfortable, but they’re not built for the demands of today. A CRM doesn’t just track your progress; it adjusts dynamically to help you avoid bottlenecks, ensuring you reach your goals more efficiently.
Lessons from 2024: Change Is a Journey
The businesses that I’ve seen thrive didn’t just adopt tools like CRM; they committed to embedding change into their culture. It wasn’t about replacing every process overnight but about taking small, meaningful steps toward a more efficient future.
Leaders played a crucial role here. The ones who embraced change, led by example, and encouraged their teams to adopt new systems were the ones who saw the most success. Change isn’t just about systems—it’s about mindset.
Thoughts for 2025
As we move into a new year, it’s worth reflecting on how your business operates. Are your processes working for you, or are you spending valuable time managing inefficiencies? Are you relying on methods that feel familiar but don’t scale?
2025 is an opportunity to rethink, recalibrate, and evolve. It’s not about making sweeping changes overnight but about taking the first step toward working differently. Whether it’s embracing tools like CRM, exploring automation, or simply streamlining how you operate, the benefits of making those adjustments can be transformative.
For me, 2024 has been a year of witnessing the power of change. I’ve seen small businesses turn inefficiencies into opportunities, move away from outdated methods, and position themselves for growth. It’s been inspiring to watch, and I can’t wait to see what the next year holds.
Looking Forward
Every business is unique, and the right time to make a change will look different for everyone. But what I’ve learned this year is that those willing to embrace change, even when it feels uncomfortable, are the ones who set themselves up for long-term success.
Change isn’t always easy, but when approached thoughtfully, it opens doors to opportunities we couldn’t have imagined.
If you’ve been considering how to work smarter in 2025, now is the perfect time to start exploring your options. Whether it’s rethinking processes, introducing new tools, or simply having a conversation about what’s possible, I’d love to help.
Let’s take that first step together. If this resonates with you, feel free to schedule a time to chat in December or January. There’s no pressure—just an opportunity to explore how your business can navigate the next year with clarity and confidence.
As we step into 2025, my hope is that more businesses feel empowered to take that step—big or small—toward something better. Here’s to a year of innovation, opportunity, and growth, driven by a willingness to adapt and evolve.
Let’s make 2025 the year of working smarter, not harder.
