Why 2020 should be celebrated and not wished away

One only need look at the amount of online media about drought, bushfires and COVID-19 to see it has been one of the most challenging years for many, if not all of us. But what concerns me are the amount of posts I see or comments I hear where people just wish that 2020 would end already, assuming that 2021 will bring with it a brighter and better chapter suddenly.

Despite a tough year, it is a year of your life nonetheless and we should make the most of it and celebrate the positives which I am sure are there.

2020 started with me loving my job, working for an airline I love and with many grand plans ahead, but that job I thought was a cornerstone in my career became a mere stepping stone. My most valuable takeaway from that experience is I have truly realised my ability to pivot and adapt quickly. Remaining agile and willing to explore beyond your comfort zone opens up new learning opportunities to continue to grow and apply transferrable skills to new frontiers.

2020 will always be the year my husband and I took a chance on and adopted a rescue pup we called Cooper. He has become a huge positive in our lives and couldn’t imagine life without him now.

2020 will always be the year I completed my MBA-Global (thanks JCU). An achievement I am immensely proud of and despite what the world threw at me I refrained from ingesting too much negative news, stayed focus on my study, and kept my eyes on the end prize.?

In December 2020, I will celebrate the first anniversary of marrying my best friend and it will also mark 10 wonderful years with him in my life. In a year of many ups and downs, that just brings a huge smile to my face as I relive the many memories we have created.

So, was 2020 a year of happy smooth sailing? Absolutely not. I have faced a lot of challenges this year, as have many others, and still dealing with some including some health challenges being faced by my parents as I write this. But I have been selective to what online content I expose myself to and choose to ingest, because too much negativity will pull anyone’s spirit down.

We have all had a tough year, some tougher than others. But I invite you to look for the positives. Relive them and celebrate them as these are what you want to remember 2020 for.?
