Why 1-2-1 Coaching doesn’t work...

In 2014 I was fired from a job I thought was my Dream Job.
I left Nike to chase a role I thought was going to take my career to the next level.
Instead of moving forward with my career. I went backwards.?
3 months in and I was fired from this ‘Dream Job’. I’d gone from Brand Director to unemployed in the blink of an eye.
And so began a long period of job hunting - 8 months to be exact. A very very tough 8 months.
Feeling alone in my job hunt, I employed the services of a Career Coach. I was struggling to find a job and needed someone in my corner.
We began working together on a bi-weekly basis. Every 2 weeks we’d meet at a cafe in Central London and I would desperately try to get 2 weeks worth of issues out on the table for her to help me.
It was during this time I realised - 1-2-1 coaching doesn’t work when you have a specific goal in mind like securing a new job.?
It might work if you need someone to speak with ongoing, similar to a therapist. But when there is a specific goal like a new job, 1-2-1 coaching doesn’t cut it.
Feast and Famine
The issue with 1-2-1 coaching is that it is confined to such small moments of interaction.?
In my case 1 hour, every 2 weeks. Every 2 weeks I’d feast on my coaches support like a hungry animal. And in between those sessions, it was famine.
Between the sessions, I would often feel alone and unsupported. Even though I could email my coach with questions, it wasn’t the same.?
And I couldn’t afford to meet up with her once or twice a week.
Something was missing
Some crucial things were missing. My coach wasn’t an expert in job hunting. She was great at coaching but would always send me away to work things out on my own.?
But I needed tactics and strategies FAST. I couldn’t afford to work it out on my own. I needed a job hunting expert who had already worked all these things out.
I also needed more of a community. It was always just her and I. The two of us. And it really left like I was in the trenches by myself most the time.
It was up to me to build a community around me, but it took time to do this and I struggled.
Finally, I needed ongoing support. I didn’t have to speak everyday. But I needed to option to speak at least a few times a week.
In Aug 2014, I finally secured a new role in the Marketing team at Apple. I wish I could attribute some of this to my coach. But honestly, I felt like I’d had to work so much of it out myself.
Once I started working at Apple, people started to send me their friends who needed help with job hunting. And so - without meaning to - I started a little coaching business.
The Go-To-Expert
It grew and grew. And all of a sudden I found myself the go-to-expert in how to secure a job in Marketing in London.
And the beginnings of the Creative Career Level Up was born.?
I wanted to create a bespoke tailored programme to help those in Marketing and the Creative and Tech industries to secure their next perfect role.?
Crafting the perfect support
Basically, I wanted to create the programme I wish Id had when I was job hunting in 2014 - a programme that included everything I thought was missing from my 1-2-1 coaching.?
? There needed to be an online training portal, so people could learn basic skills like how to pitch and position themselves as the must hired candidate.
? I wanted clients to have access to me twice a week if they needed it, so there would be no need for feast and famine between sessions.
? I wanted to build a community of like-minded individuals who could support each other - not just in the job hunt but long term as they advanced their careers. And I wanted this community to be global - so clients could learn from people all over the world.
So this is what I created. An online coaching and training programme specifically designed to the bespoke needs of clients with one outcome - securing their next perfect role.
And so the Creative Career Level Up was born.? The perfectly crafted support for those in Marketing and the Creative and Tech industries, looking to secure their next perfect role.?
Goodbye to 1-2-1 Coaching and Hello to a whole world of ongoing support and training, hyper-focused on securing your next perfect role.
