Who’s Your Daddy? The Twitter Files Revelation for Online Businesses & Creators

Have you seen the whole uproar regarding the Twitter Files lately?

In case you’re leaving under a rock...?

The news is that Elon Musk has been releasing dirt on what the previous team at Twitter have done

Currently, there are 4 installments of the Twitter Files

His releasing these files (twitter threads) in multiple installments (like an email sequence LOL - smart guy)

Apparently what the Twitter Files have been revealing so far is that there is “shadow-banning” and censorship happening on the platform

Ones that appear to be biased

So much so, it has brought people to question Twitter’s “involvement” in politics and the elections?

Well, I do not care much for politics nor have much of an opinion on such things to be honest

I’m just focused on the things that I have control over

But I personally believe that if what the Twitter Files has revealed so far is true, then it's just wrong and unfortunate that it's so

Yet… I’m not surprised….?

And I’m not mad either!?

With the rise in our dependence on these platforms (both as creators and consumers)

Creators — like you, businesses, influencers—people like us who build our audiences on these platforms

Consumers — the majority of people spending massive amounts of time on each platform

As a marketer and creator myself, I’ve seen firsthand the amount of power these big tech companies have

First, there was the Facebook business page—where you could create a post and you’ll get pretty decent engagements (possibly new sales even)?

What happened to that? Nerved down!?

It’s pretty useless now; an organic business page post gets you what… 2 likes?

So if you wanna utilize it, you gotta pay for ads (nothing wrong with that)

Then there were Instagram business profiles where the same thing happened

Organic reach went down and you gotta run ads for your stuff to be seen

Then you start running paid ads…. BAM

Suddenly your ad account gets shut down!

Another hit to your business

Not too long ago, there was also the Paid Traffic Warzone happening (still is for some people)?

That was when Apple updated its iOS privacy policies and cause a significant dip in ad performance and tracking

Let's not forget the number of times YouTube takes down videos that don’t fit “the narrative”

We recently also have controversial public figures like Donald Trump, Andrew Tate, and Kanye West all getting banned on these platforms?

My point is that even though I dislike the power these platforms have over “free speech”—can we truly blame them though?

Whoever owns the house makes the rules (who’s your daddy?)

Thus, if we’re building our audience on these platforms, we HAVE to abide by THEIR rules

Break them, and you’ll get whacked…

The solution??

1/ build your own social media platform?

Or an easier way…

2/ build an email list

With an email list, you’ll have MUCH MORE control over what you can say, how you say it, and you’ll never be at the mercy of external conditions

Sure, there are still things like Gmail filters, promo tabs, spam issues, etc.?

But they’re enormously easier to handle and it’s more open-source than these big tech platforms

Don’t get me wrong

I’m not saying don’t use social media (heck, if not for social media I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today—neither would you be reading this post)

Social media is a wonderful tool

But use it to build your email list too

An audience you build on these platforms belongs to them NOT you

But an email list is an audience you own!

Lastly…

Many of you might be thinking?

“Dude, I’m not a controversial figure, I’m just here to run my business so I won’t get banned”?

Well, props to you!?

  • But do you like the money?
  • Do you like more sales?
  • Do you like to build a deeper affinity with your audience/customers??

If so, then you'd be dumb not to have an email list

Stats for the nerds:

  • 72% of people would rather receive marketing materials from brands through their email while only 17% reported they would prefer that same content through social media.
  • For every $1 invested in Email Marketing, the return might be around $36.

A quick Google search would show you how powerful email marketing is (partly why I’m focused/enjoy building my skillsets in this space)

Might as well start building your list now (if you haven’t already)

If you already have a list, start hitting it more!?

An email list is like insurance when you don't need it

And it's a goldmine when you use it

Be your own daddy
