Who's Writing This Chapter Of Your Life?

Chart Your Course

Yesterday I ran a difficult trail race.  Weather conditions were optimal, and I had prepared.  As the race progressed, a nagging injury surfaced, and frustration crept in as others passed me on the final 1/3 of the course.

I reminded myself that I was running my race. This was for me and not anyone cruising by at the present moment.  In a few short, yet painful hours, the race would end, and their faces would be out of my mind forever.

My focus was restored, and I took in the beauty around while releasing the frustration and pain within.

I use this mental approach on a daily basis. For the last five years,  I've been coaching other health professionals through transition and change using this mindset.

The initial barriers are always the same.  The mindset and mental hurdles are common and predictable.

The same excuses surface over and over:

  • I don't have the ability
  • You don't understand
  • My situation is different
  • If only I was _______
  • People expect me to do this

One Shot At This

You only get one shot at this and the above are nothing more that the false rationale used to keep you in place.  Letting others drive your decisions and dictate your future is a failure to live your life.

Your Terms

You may have heard this phrase before, but it deserves repeating:

Don't spend your life climbing the ladder only to realize it's against the wrong building.

Only you can decide the most important question.

Take a moment and answer this:

What's your why?

Why do you do anything is how you do everything.  What purpose and passion dictates your decision process and guides you through life.

This is not an easy question and deserves serious contemplation. Please don't rush through this exercise and blurt out the first thought that surfaces.  Look deep into your core and peel back the layers of your soul to reveal its true desires and your ultimate purpose for being here.

Get Out Of The Pack

We are all guilty of following the herd or pack mentality. Going with the flow and doing what we believe others want us to do.

Take that job. Attend every meeting we are asked to attend.  Work 40 hours a week at a job we can't stand.  Save for the future and hope and pray we survive long enough to enjoy some retirement.

Is that all you want from your life?  Does this story line suit you?  Will you lie on your death bed and look back at the past 60 years and breathe a sense of satisfaction or feel the tears well in your eyes for a life not lived?

Decide Now

Only you can decide what story you will write for yourself.  You are in charge of what script to follow and let the answer to your why guide you.

Choosing to live with intention and purpose going forward will reshape your future and provide the real reward of a journey worth taking.

What storyline are you creating for your future?
