Congrats! You got the call for your first pitch to a journo!

But are you ready-set-to-go? Here are 5 top tips to help you master the art of perception to get pitch perfect for your first pitch call.

  1. Get Pitch Perfect! Move over elevator pitch! Elevator Pitching is overrated and not a method you can use on journalists. Journalist do not like salesy pitches whose main agenda is to serve your self-interest. Make sure your pitch is genuinely non-transactional but of human interest.
  2. The Art of Perception: The industry secret to overcoming the impostor syndrome is the Art of Perception, that is the PR prescription in presenting yourself as a Thought Leader and backing it up!?Be the expert and lead the conversation so you sound and are seen to be knowledgeable and not the other way round.
  3. Use natural language: Journalists can SMELL an impostor or the syndrome of it…The best way to avoid falling into this unwelcome category is to be prepared with your authentic human story narrative [NOT BRAND JARGON] Journalists will let you know when its time to speak about your brand – but if you do it too soon – it may be off putting for them and they will go in ‘defence mode’ and act dismissive towards you.
  4. Facts not fiction: Its essential you DO YOUR HOME WORK’ and ensure you know the REASON for the media opportunity inside out and you are ready to present yourself as the THOUGHT LEADER backing it up with STATS!

5. Be Authentic: Remember journalist love fact checking. If you say something that does not add up, you'll either be humiliated (if in camera) or they won't print your article and we'll never call on you ever again.

Always come over prepared, than being on the back foot scrambling for details!
