"Who's the Boss?" 10 Strategies for Taking Control (Time Management, Goal Setting, Record Tracking)

At first glance, positive thinking and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) may seem unrelated. However, many of us with ADD develop negative thinking patterns due to frustration and frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. This negative outlook can make it even harder to manage challenges and progress.


Practicing positive thinking enables people with ADD to focus on strengths and accomplishments, increasing happiness and motivation. This, in turn, allows for more time spent making progress and less time feeling stuck. The following strategies offer practical suggestions to shift into more positive thinking patterns:

Prioritize Self-Care

Maintaining a positive outlook is easier when you prioritize proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate rest.

Cultivate Gratitude

Stresses and challenges appear less daunting when you regularly remind yourself of the good things in life. Taking just 60 seconds a day to appreciate the positives can make a significant difference.

Seek Evidence, Not Assumptions

Fear of rejection sometimes leads to assumptions about what others think, but these fears are often unfounded. If you fear a negative reaction, communicate openly rather than dwelling on assumptions.

Avoid Absolute Statements

Using words like 'always' or 'never' exaggerates situations and reinforces negative beliefs about others.

Distance Yourself from Negative Thoughts

Don't let negative thoughts dictate your mood. When you notice them, observe them without judgment and let them pass.

Combat Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs)

Recognize and challenge automatic negative thoughts as they arise. They're often irrational and unproductive.

Embrace Physical Contact

Positive physical interactions, like hugs, boost mood instantly. Even small gestures of touch can make a difference.

Foster Social Connections

Increased social activity reduces loneliness and exposes you to positive influences.

Give Back

Volunteering or helping others generates positive energy and enhances well-being.

Interrupt Negative Thought Patterns

When ruminating, disrupt the pattern by engaging in a different activity. Change your environment, call a friend, or immerse yourself in a hobby.


In the corporate world, adherence to protocol is often considered essential. While productivity basics are crucial, maintaining healthy interactions and a steady mindset are equally important. Although some individuals thrive under pressure, it's important to acknowledge our imperfections and avoid letting stress consume us. Admitting when we're overworking ourselves takes courage, but it's essential for finding balance and true productivity.
