Like everyone, I’m saddened and shaken up by Kobe’s passing. And I'm reminded, on a Monday nonetheless as I snail towards trying to be productive, to not allow such a tragic loss of a world class talent, to occur without pushing for the continued impact his legacy can have on all of us. Kobe was a champion of the highest order. He committed himself to his craft, and sport like no other from my generation. So many of us can distinctively recall two decades worth of odds-defying shots taken, and so many clutch moves and plays that brought Los Angeles five NBA championships. So much joy, and excitement was derived from his peerless talent on the court.
His untimely death should remind us all to live for today, but to commit ourselves to something greater. It should inspire us to strive for greatness. To spread positivity. To influence young people around us in a meaningful way, and push us all to do good in our surrounding world. He lived an extreme example. Most of us cannot commit to things on such levels. It could break us, or damage our relationships. But we each have to decide what’s most important to us, and take inventory, in order to fully understand what legacy we want to leave behind.
I strongly believe Kobe was just getting started, in business, writing, investments, media, most important to him: the continued love of the game, and nurturing his little girl to carry the torch of being the greatest baller she could be. He’s left me mindful of what I want to leave the world with, and how I spend my time. Although I think of these things often, his tragic death is a lighting strike to take action. We can’t let such a loss occur in vain. This pain should force us to change, and be better.
