A Whole Different Game

"You know, because you got stuck there, too." Randall said it and it was like he threw me a 50 pound bag of potatoes and then said "Hey" afterwards. What got us there was talking about how you get stuck in figuring out next levels of growth for your business.

A Whole Different Game

I can't tell you what I want to tell you because it's based on a lot of private numbers, but it's basically like realizing that your company isn't exactly doing the same thing all the other companies that look like it are doing: at least not the more you dig.

But what I can tell you is that McDonalds isn't in the fast food business. They're a real estate development and holding company. They have the second most privately held land after the Catholic church, last I read somewhere. When you realize this, you also have to accept that it doesn't matter whether Kanye West is the next celebrity meal collab or not.

Related: I didn't learn a single thing about marketing until October 2021. That's despite having worked in and around marketing (and won several awards) from 2006 until the present. Why do I say that? Because I finally saw what could really move a product, and it didn't look anything like what I was doing.

The Only Way You'll See It Is If You Look

The world operates one way that everyone sees pretty much the same. And at many different little junctures, everything looks similar. But it's not. Randall's playing one game. You and I are playing a similar game near him. And I'm sure there are others doing this who aren't Randall. But they're probably like him. They see the world at a different tilt.

What can yo do right now? Look around at what you're doing. Consider where you're stuck. Bring in advisors (paid or otherwise) for a peek at your works and see if they can find a path for you to climb over the hill. Take advice. Test, take little bites of that other path that looks like the one you though you were on.

And seek to find that other game, the one that looks like the one everyone else is playing.

That's the one worth thinking about more.

It's so easy to overlook how we frame and see things. It's true on multiple fronts: companies seem healthy based on branding and marketing but aren't, seems like your in the business of X but it's really Y, and even deciding what "sandbox" you want to play in when it comes to costs and industries. I've recently been feel stuck with a variety of things. After one coaching call yesterday, I feel way better and can see where I need to focus. Good stuff Chris.

Nice article, Chris! It's always good to see things from a different perspective. Of course, the trick is to recognize and appreciate the opportunity to be close enough to learn and see the world (or game) the way others (like Randall) see it. It seems like you already do.

And some of us have ourselves convinced we don't want to play the same game as ANYONE else! Sometimes it bites you in the ass and sometimes, you own game is exactly what you need to be playing!
