The Whole Boss with Katherina Capra

The Whole Boss with Katherina Capra

Is it possible to be respected as a boss and be caring towards your employees at the same time? We explored this question with Katherina Capra, an executive coach and trained economist who’s the founder of Unity Grow, a coaching company.

Senia: What do you believe that others in your field may not believe?

Katherina: Most people don't realize the difference between the boss and the whole boss. The boss is smart and independent, with a focus on doing the job well. The whole boss is a wise person whose focus goes beyond goals and outcomes to connecting with people. Words that fit a whole boss include firm, fair, friendly and caring.

The common belief is that there is no place for love and compassion in the workplace. Contrary to that popular belief, when I worked as a CEO, I learned quickly that the key component to being a whole boss was a caring nature. I noticed that outcomes improved from good to great with this outlook. Employees want to move forward with purpose and calling. In order for them to do so effectively, we have a responsibility as bosses to help them use self reflection and build self awareness. We can provide the support and guidance that help them achieve goals.

In order for a lasting impact to be made, there is a need for a whole boss who considers people as whole beings. COVID-19 has made people more empathetic towards others. People are longing for deep relationships and connection. We must pay attention to the needs of others. Be more observant and ask people detailed questions about how they are doing.

As leaders, we have to create space for team members to feel comfortable coming to us. We have to hold space that says, "I’m here for you." "I am here to guide you and support you and I care about doing so."

Senia: What is one thought you want to leave with everyone?

Katherina: I’ve actually got a three-part answer, if that’s okay:

  1. If you can afford a coach, hire Senia. Coaching is about finding the positive elements in everyone, and she is doing that daily by connecting with wonderful coaches from all over who give tips, tools, and resources on how to improve the quality of our lives.
  2. Pay attention to others.
  3. Learn, grow, and teach the wisdom of how people evolve and grow.

Senia: What’s one action you would like everyone to take?

Katherina: Develop and maintain a powerful relationship with yourself. Then from your overflow, develop powerful loving relationships with others. Help others. It’s true that the world isn’t equal, but we can make a better world, better communities, better organizations by being people-centered, living in community with others.
