Whoa, we're halfway there

Whoa, we're halfway there

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most professionally gratifying things to happen to me so far this year is to see TBD Marketing Ltd ’s series of Legal LinkedInfluencers reports gain so much traction across the legal sector.

Gratifying, because the team at TBD Towers puts a heck of a lot of effort into producing this quarterly top-100 ranking of the profession’s leading voices on LinkedIn – from collating and analysing thousands of items of data, to compiling, writing and designing the report, to all the comms work that accompanies the publication of each edition. So I’m pleased as punch for the team that their hard work has been met with such enthusiasm within the industry.

But it’s fair to say that I’m equally pleased for all those individuals recognised in our reports – pleased to be able to celebrate their contribution to the legal community’s online discourse as they make their unique voice heard on what is arguably the world’s most powerful professional networking and business development platform.

I know for a fact that appearing in our report has made a big difference to many of those who have featured in the rankings – not only has it helped them to raise their profile and gain a bigger audience, but they have also been able to forge new professional relationships and even friendships along the way. That’s surely a huge win in anyone’s book.

On that happy note, I want to draw your attention to the fact that our Q3 (July-September) LinkedInfluencers Report will be out on 10 October. And we’re only at the current quarter’s half-way mark, so there is still everything to play for if you’re keen to get ranked this time around.?

Just ask Emma Mack and Emma Geale how far a bit of determination (coupled with bags of personality) will get you – in their case, from outside the top-100 ranking in Q1 2024, all the way into 9th and 21st place respectively in Q2 within the space of just 12 weeks of focused LinkedIn posting.

Here is a reminder of who can be ranked in our quarterly Legal LinkedInfluencers Report:?

  • Anyone working at a Top 200 UK law firm;
  • Leaders from those firms;?
  • People from independent, SRA-regulated law firms; and?
  • Barristers at the Top 50 UK chambers.?

For our next report, we would really love to hear from more missing voices from our top 200 firms and indies and barristers. So if you think you have a shot at being ranked, or simply want to know where you stand compared to your peers, then head on over to our nifty Legal LinkedInfluencers Power Rating Calculator.?

And if you score above 1,000, please let us know so we can take your score into consideration when we crunch all the numbers for Q3. You can also nominate others – I’m looking at you, marketing people!

In fact, if you are a member of your firm’s marketing team, feel free to reach out to the TBD team at [email protected] and we can tell you how many people at your firm are currently in our top 100. This could help you give your people a nudge and keep them on their LinkedIn A-game.

There’s 46 days remaining between today and 30th September, the final day of Q3. Or 1 month and 15 days. Or 6 weeks and 4 days. In other words: plenty of time to get posting on LinkedIn and perhaps see your name in our next ranking.

So in the spirit of the recently concluded Olympics: On your marks… Set… POST!

Our inaugural LinkedInfluencers Event

Imagine if we got some of the most influential people on LinkedIn into a room to talk about how they got where they are, what the challenges are that they face and also to debate the Gen Z/Gen Y/Gen X dynamics around social media?

Well… thanks to Browne Jacobson , it’s happening and we’re hosting an event on Thursday 10 October which is strictly limited to 50 people. We have amazing panellists and hosts, and I’ll be revealing the results of the latest rankings.

Fancy joining us? Let us know here and we’ll let you know if you win a golden ticket to attend. It’s free but it’s going to be amazing.

Episode 2 of But Is It Legal? is out

On this week’s episode of our new TBD podcast, the aforementioned Emma Geale speaks to me about her career journey as a private client lawyer, how she conquered the TBD LinkedInfluencer rankings, and the inspiration she finds in the lyrics of Taylor Swift. You can listen/watch here:

Prominent chancery barrister leaves chambers following controversial Southport tweets

As reported in The Lawyer on Tuesday, commercial litigator and The Spectator commentator Steven Barrett has left Radcliffe Chambers after 13 years following a series of tweets relating to the Southport murders on 29 July. Later quoted by English Defence League founder Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson), Barrett’s tweets were condemned by Rother Valley MP Jake Richards as “deranged and dangerous” in a now-deleted tweet on X (formerly Twitter).

Disney insists widower’s free Disney+ trial means he cannot bring wrongful death suit

In a case covered by the Guardian on Wednesday, Disney World is seeking to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit brought by a husband over the death of his wife at the resort last year because of the terms and conditions he agreed to when signing up for the Disney+ streaming service several years earlier.?

Dr Kanokporn Tangsuan, a medical doctor from New York with a severe allergy to dairy and nuts, died from anaphylaxis after eating a meal with her husband Jeffrey Piccolo at the Disney World Resort in Florida on 5 October last year, despite the waiting staff’s repeated reassurances that her meal was allergen-free.?

However, Disney’s lawyers argue that the wrongful death lawsuit brought by Piccolo following these events should be dismissed and settled out of court because Piccolo agreed to the company’s terms of use – which state that users agree to settle any disputes with the company out of court via arbitration – when he signed up for a one-month free trial of Disney+ in 2019, and again in 2023, when he purchased the theme park tickets using his Disney account.

Pinsent Masons gives employees Friday afternoons off

Last week, Legal Cheek reported that lawyers across Pinsent Masons’ UK, Europe and Middle East are currently trialling a new compressed work-week scheme, in which all employees can finish work early on Fridays without any cut in salary. The scheme is now at the end of its third week and will be reviewed at the end of the month trialling it across its Johannesburg and Asia Pacific offices in 2025.

Lawyer runs Olympic marathon despite broken leg

When it comes to stories of sheer grit and determination in the face of adversity, few could surpass the accomplishment of lawyer Rose Harvey, who – as reported in the Law Society Gazette on Wednesday – continued to run all the way to the finish line in the marathon event at the Paris Olympics despite realising two miles in that she was injured with what turned out to be a stress fracture in her femur.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s edition!
