Who is in your foxhole?
I couldn't find a picture of a foxhole that I liked...so I went with a pic of last night's dinner...

Who is in your foxhole?

A lot is said and written about the people you surround yourself with.?Sidney Poitier is quoted as saying “when you walk with someone, something unspoken happens.?Either you match their pace, or they match yours.”?As a result, you either RISE to or SINK to the level of those you spend the most time with, your inner circle.

You may have more than one foxhole: a personal one and a professional one. You may even need one for a project, or to help achieve a specific goal, like completing a marathon.?Some people in your life may be that important to you that they are beside you in each of those foxholes. While some people will only need to be in the foxhole for a specific portion of the journey.

Merriam-Webster defines a foxhole as a pit dug usually hastily for individual cover from enemy fire.?In many cases, for me, that enemy fire is coming from my head.?So, when I am thinking about who I want in my foxhole, I am thinking about who is going to help become a better person, husband, father, CFO.? And who is most likely to hold me accountable and propel me forward.?

Self-awareness is critical.?Just as critical as the goal.?Not only do you need to know where you are headed.?You need to know what is stopping you from getting there.?What skills/strengths do you have??Which ones are you missing??What are those gaps between who you are and who you need to be to accomplish your goal??Specific people should be in that foxhole with you to close specific gaps.

Are you not sure how to get there? Find someone in your network who has gotten “THERE” and ask them to mentor you.?Search your network for thought partners.?People you can brainstorm with.?People who can support and who you can support.?Need someone to help hold you accountable? Find a coach, or someone in your circle that’s comfortable getting tough with you when you need it most.

Who is in your foxhole? And why?

Great points. I would add one to that. Being the mentor on the run to that foxhole is also a valuable role. You don’t always need to look for people in your foxhole who will “lift” you up, doing the lifting is also a valuable leadership trait. Sometimes we need to be the bottom of the pyramid to make it strong.
