Who is your Five?
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” - Jim Rohn
Have you heard that quote before? I imagine many of you have. When is the last time you actually wrote those five people down? Have you ever scored them, on a one through five scale based on the amount of value they add to your life?
I was challenged to do just that yesterday. I was invited by one of my mentors, Dr. Billy Alsbrooks, to come to his seminar event in San Antonio. I woke up yesterday morning at 5:30am so I had time to workout and eat a proper breakfast. I then made the four hour cruise down I-35 to the Emily Morgan hotel near the Alamo and had the privilege to listen to Dr. Alsbrooks testimony and lesson.
If you have never heard of Dr. Alsbrooks I highly encourage you to look him up on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@BillyAlsbrooks ). He is one of the most creative and powerful artist / motivational speakers I have ever had the chance to meet. He captivated the room for nearly five hours - speaking the whole time without a break.
I left with over twenty pages notes. In fact, I wrote so many notes one of the hotel pens I had been given ran out of ink and I had to go find a new one. About midway through Dr. Alsbrooks asked us to write down the five people we spend the most time with. He didn’t have stop there, though, he added a step. He then asked us to grade them (one through five - one being a burden and a five being a high-impact person).
I have been open and vulnerable about my journey. The path of a champion, an entrepreneur, and a game-changer is at times a lonely road. Many “friends” have proven they aren’t really friends. My own parents and sister decided I was a heathen and unworthy of being a part of their lives because I want to live a life on my own terms and not be dictated to and controlled by a corrupt profit-at-all-costs corporation. Admittedly, I struggled to write the five people…the first was easy, and of course, my beautiful wife, Sarah, but after her…who?
I started to feel sad from the hurt of losing people who would normally have been on that list. “C’mon, Sean there’s still people though - so who are they I thought.” And then the names started coming to the front of my mind. Powerful names.

See, every Wednesday night I am in a Bible Study and mentorship group with Dr. Alsbrooks and a close-knit group of six other emerging leaders. We spend over two hours on a Zoom call together, and encourage each other each day in a private group.
I had the privilege of meeting Marcus Taylor, another incredible motivational speaker and YouTuber, just by mere chance in July. Our relationship has bloomed into an incredible mentorship and I had the honor of visiting him in his hometown in Cleveland two weeks ago - that’s why even though the Texas Rangers are going to win the World Series this year you see me sporting my Guardians cap all the time.
Joe McGrail is a sales consultant and helped grow Yodle, an online marketing and technology company, into the behemoth it is today. What started out as a normal business relationship has turned into an incredible coaching and mentorship on my technology business, Opilio. Joe is an expert at his craft and his ability and knowledge of marketing has led to cold-email metrics that are out of this world - open rates of greater than 80%, clickthrough rates of greater than 50%, and actual results in just a few short weeks. He taught me his process and I will forever be grateful.
Manny Sembroni is a former professional football player from Italy (soccer for us Americans). He is an incredible financial expert and has given me referrals, encouragement, and advice for nothing in return - just out of kindness and helping others. He is one of the most generous and genuine people I have ever met. If you need help with your finances I highly encourage you to reach out to Manny.
Sometimes its okay to brag, and that’s what I am doing right now. I know my rise has been fast. I know it has probably taken some of you by surprise, and I know that some, maybe not the people reading this, but others feel a sense of resentment. Here’s the thing - my come-up has not been by accident. It is just the law of averages, as Tony Robbins would call it. I am being lifted by the collective knowledge and wisdom being poured into me by my Five.
But it doesn’t have to just be me. You can elevate yourself this same way, too. As Dr. Alsbrooks says, “anyone can be successful, but not everyone is willing to pay the price.” The price isn’t a dollar amount either. Are you willing to sacrifice your current five, go into the dark room, alone, for a season as Marcus describes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svDiqqnGCeU ), and then come back with a new Five, a new creation, and a new mission?
If you’re ready to fulfill your destiny and become the hero of your story and you don’t want to go into the depths of the dark room totally alone - I am happy to discuss being your guide. Direct message me if you’re ready to transcend.
