Who are You Without the Fruit?

Who are You Without the Fruit?

What defines you as an entrepreneur?

  • Is it the profit margin?
  • The number of clients you’ve landed?
  • The fancy title on your LinkedIn profile?

Or is it something deeper?

Today, I heard a quote that stopped me in my tracks: “It’s our labor that makes us who we are, not the fruit that it yields.”

Read that again.

As entrepreneurs, we pour our hearts and souls into the work.

  • The long hours.
  • The late nights.
  • The countless sacrifices.

We chase results—profits, accolades, growth.

And when those results don’t come fast enough? We start to question ourselves.

  • Our abilities.
  • Our worth.

But what if the real value isn’t in the outcome? What if it’s in the effort?

  • The grit.
  • The tenacity it takes to keep going, day after day, even when the results feel out of reach.

This quote reminded me that being an entrepreneur isn’t about the fruit—it’s about who you become in the process.

  • The skills you hone.
  • The resilience you build.
  • The courage you show.

Success isn’t a moment. It’s a journey. And every laborious step you take along the way is shaping you into the business owner—and person—you’re meant to be.

So, the next time you feel frustrated or defeated because the “fruit” isn’t ripe yet, remind yourself:

It’s not the harvest that defines you. It’s the hard work you’ve put into the soil.

What do you think? Does this perspective shift how you view your journey?

Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear how your labor has shaped you.

This reminds me of an article I wrote a while back … I used to tell my dance partner in rehearsal that the goal is the journey and the journey is the goal. Being an artist has really supported me in the journey of entrepreneurship. Because I have the value of the process deeply engrained in me and I honor that deeply. Thank you for sparking this remembrance Tina.

I hear that over and over - I have this many clients, and my ROI is this, but one comment that changed my way of looking at this was one of my friends saying, that is way too low; think of everything you put into it. It is not just the time you spend with the client, it is everything around, before and after.
