Who Are You?

Do you feel that you are limited by your title? Are you a parent? A mom or dad? Maybe your someone’s sibling? Maybe you’re an aunt or uncle, yes? You’re also an employee – somewhere – working for someone. Then again, maybe you’re a small business owner, an entrepreneur, a coach, or a speaker. Wow! On any given day, you have exchanged hats (i.e., your “titles”) so many times. I applaud you. You are amazing!
At the end of the day, however, who are you?
When you lie down in your bed at the end of each day, what title are you putting to rest? One of them? Some of them? All of them? You get to decide.
However, have you ever taken a step back or taken a long, hard look in the mirror? Who do you see? Do you see the “mom” or “dad” that your children see? Do you see the “employee” that your boss sees? What does the “entrepreneur” you really look like??
Embracing Your Authentic Self
We often forget we are more than our titles – whatever titles we hold. Although our roles and responsibilities will always be there, they should not create the image of who we truly are. Our authentic self will not be found, or defined, by the things around us. Who we are is found within. The thing is many of us have failed in the journey to find ourselves. It is a journey that I failed at . . . at least, until recently.
That is, until I made a second attempt at my life. Since then, my journey to find me has been an exciting, albeit tedious, journey. But now that I have embraced the journey and have been in many conversations with people who have experienced their own journey, I can now celebrate both the journey and the destination. ?
During a planning session for The Envision Speaker Series with Marlene Mier , Sarah Cotterill , and Carrie Allen , we brought up the topic of embracing ourselves outside of our titles. This notion intrigued me, as it challenged us to think about who we are as people beyond our professional identities. I felt the idea needed further investigation.
The impromptu exercise during the planning session made me realize that defining ourselves can be a challenging task. Even after months of introspection and self-reflection, I still find it difficult to put into words who I truly am. And that's okay because personal growth is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and evolution.
So, the question is, how do we define ourselves without the use of job titles, roles, or external responsibilities?
For many years, and even now (to some degree), I struggled with finding the right words. The journey to understand oneself and communicate that understanding effectively takes times, and a great deal of effort.
How do we navigate this ongoing process of self-discovery?
This is Carrie’s story . . .
Her journey towards authenticity began when burnout forced her to leave her corporate job. Until that time, Carrie was living her dream. She loved the work, and the responsibilities. But the work environment . . . especially the person she worked for . . . was toxic. That toxicity was making her sick. Even her own family knew something was not right. But Carrie stuck it out until her mind, and her body, told her to stop.
In the process of healing and rediscovering herself, meditation played a crucial role. Through quiet moments of stillness and introspection, she began to understand who she truly was. She did not find herself within a title or role.
Meditation helped her connect with her body, which had been screaming at her for change. Her spirit was no longer whispering to her. It was now clarifying her identity, her authentic self. ?
Path of Self-Discovery
As she continued on this path of self-discovery, she recognized how words became powerful tools for self-expression. The way we describe ourselves shapes our interactions with others and influences how they perceive us. By choosing words that reflect our authentic selves, we create opportunities for meaningful connections and conversations.

Carrie also learned that showing up authentically requires intentionality. Before entering any situation or conversation, it's important to set an intention for how we wanted to show up. This involves being aware of our emotions, values, and desires in order to communicate them effectively.
Words have the power to create connections and bridge gaps between individuals. When we choose words that reflect our true selves, we invite others to do the same. Sharing our stories and experiences unlocks empathy and understanding within communities.
The process of self-discovery . . . walking the path to our true reality . . . never ends. Each day brings new discoveries. And what you learned months ago may not be relevant today. It was a part of the pathway to discovery. The journey is so amazing . . . but it never ends!
So, how are you showing up today?
Are you choosing to slow down and be introspective?
Allow your energy to focus on self-reflection. Be present with yourself. Create a space for personal growth and deeper connections with others.
