The truth about ISDN
Many businesses believe that the ISDN switch-off is imminent, but to paraphrase Mark Twain’s famous quip, “…rumours of its death have been greatly exaggerated.” ISDN telephone lines have been used widely over the last twenty years and yes, they are due to be phased out, but this will occur over two stages. The first phase starts this year, 2020, and means you’ll no longer be able to order new ISDN lines for your business. But Phase 2, when ISDN products are removed entirely, won’t occur until 2025.
Why the change over?
So why are we saying goodbye to ISDN? Copper cables buried in the ground have served us well for almost 100 years but the modern focus is on fibre optic-based products. Today’s businesses want faster, more reliable internet connections and many are already using VoIP (Voice over IP) to deliver telephony. So the future of telecommunications is VoIP and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). Although there is no immediate urgency, if you are an ISDN user, you should be making plans to change to SIP with a VoIP phone system, especially if you’re in a position where a new phone system makes sense for your organisation. However, time is still on your side and it might well be that sticking with your ISDN system for a few more years is the right choice for your business. But how will you know?
