In Search of 42

You may have noticed that I recently rebranded my podcast to "In Search of 42," paying homage to the answer to life, the universe, and everything proposed by Douglas Adams.

I've been looking for a rebrand for a while now to better capture the content and conversations on the show. I feel like this theme is more aligned with all of it.

What do you think?

In Search of 42

Join me on a modern quest to unravel the big questions: life, the universe, and everything. Why are we here? Why do we exist? What is our purpose?

Ditch the dusty tomes, this is an irreverent dive into existence, dissecting classic wisdom and philosophy with a modern twist.

Buckle up for interviews and thought-provoking perspectives as we chase answers across philosophy, neuroscience, and the human experience. It's more fun than waiting for Deep Thought to reboot!

Imposter Syndrome

If you listen to my podcast episode this week on Who Are You? (see below), you will come to discover a part of my life where I suffered from imposter syndrome: trying to fit in with the medical community as a surgeon when I didn't really identify as such.

Have you ever achieved something amazing, only to whisper to yourself, "I just got lucky" or "It was only a matter of time before they found out I'm a fraud"? Welcome to the club.

What is it? Despite external evidence of competence, imposter syndrome is the persistent feeling you're not good enough, fooling everyone by luck or charm. It's like carrying a shadow of self-doubt that dims your accomplishments and fuels anxiety.

Do I have it? Sadly, it's more common than you think. Studies suggest up to 70% of high-achievers experience imposter syndrome at some point. So, the answer is: possibly! Pay attention to these tell-tale signs:

  • Discounting achievements: You brush off praise with "Anyone could've done it," downplaying your hard work and skill.
  • Fear of exposure: You live in dread of someone "discovering" you're not as capable as they think.
  • Attributing success to luck or external factors: You downplay your role in achievements, crediting luck, timing, or others.
  • Perfectionism paralysis: You set impossibly high standards, leading to procrastination and self-criticism.

What can we do? The good news is, you're not powerless! Here are some ways to combat imposter syndrome:

  • Recognize and reframe: Acknowledge the voice of doubt, but challenge its legitimacy. Remind yourself of your accomplishments and skills as things you truly did accomplish and learn yourself.
  • Celebrate successes: Savor your achievements, big or small. Write them down, share them with trusted friends, and let yourself feel proud.
  • Focus on progress, not perfection: Aim for "good enough" instead of perfect. Mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures.
  • Connect with others: Talk to colleagues, mentors, or friends. Sharing your experience can be surprisingly comforting and insightful.
  • Seek professional help: If imposter syndrome significantly impacts your life, consider therapy or coaching for more personalized guidance.

Remember, imposter syndrome is a common challenge, not a character flaw. By recognizing it, challenging its narratives, and taking action, you can reclaim your confidence and celebrate your true worth. Don't let the imposter win – rewrite your story with self-belief and authenticity!

And this is a great lead-in to my podcast episode this week ...

Survey

Currently, most coaches charge several thousand dollars per month for their services which can prevent many people from receiving the help they need.

In recent time, many professionals have started to offer subscription models with an up-front retainer fee and then a monthly subscription cost in an effort to lower the cost of entry and improve access for clients.

This survey is trying to figure out if there is a market for this kind of model for coaches.

I would greatly appreciate your input. In exchange, you will have the option to be notified if/when this service becomes available.

Sharing your email address is entirely optional and will NOT be used for any other purpose than to contact you about this program if/when it becomes available. No body likes spam and you are already subscribed to this newsletter here on LinkedIn. ??
