Who Are You? Who, Who? Who, Who?
The other day, I had the opportunity to chat with an outreach worker for a non-profit organization. His passion for what he did was exciting to me. His understanding of who he is and what he does was so clear to him. As a result, who he is and what he did was also so clear to me. It got me to thinking…
“I know what I do, but how well do I know what I do? And how am I living that out?”
You’ve heard of the elevator speech. You have 20 seconds to tell someone what you do in an elevator before they reach their floor. Can you sum up what you do and who you are in a meaningful way in a short amount of time? If you do, you may have a new customer. If you don’t, you may lose them.
A manager from another company shared with me that their team goes over their core values EVERY Monday morning. Isn't that a little overboard? In a world where we can be distracted and caught up in work, a reset is refreshing. If you or your company has clear and high impact core values, it’s good to think on them at the start of each week. It’ll certainly set the tone for the work you do and the conversations you engage in.
I think we should all have a vision, mission, and core values for ourselves and also how we live as a family and as organizations. If you hold firm and live your vision, mission and core values out, they will help you gain greater focus and be more consistent, allowing others to have a better understanding of who you are.
