Who are you again?

Who are you again?

A while back, my bookkeeper updated her email service provider—or some such technical thing. I knew it because suddenly her emails didn’t come from “Jane.” Instead, the sender name showed up as “info.”

Kind of sketchy, right?

I opened the “info” email with trepidation. Was it phishing? Was a nefarious cyber attack waiting for me inside?

Alas, no. I read the contents and was convinced my bookkeeper’s email hadn’t been taken over by unscrupulous no-goodniks. Then I sent Jane McNaughton a note about this issue and she fixed it immediately.

Now when she sends me an email, it comes from “Jane” and I can be sure it’s about some bookkeeping task I’m behind on.

I’m not the only one who gets spooked by unknown or unidentified senders in my in-box.

According to Mailjet research, the most important deciding factor for opening an email is recognizing the sender.

That’s why I counsel the people I work with to send their emails from a person, not an [email protected] email address.

Now, maybe if you have a million subscribers, you might want to have it come from a different address, so comments don’t go directly into your inbox.

But let’s worry about that when you’re facing such a situation.

In the meantime, all the best newsletters I receive, come directly from the person.

Does Tom Woods, the 2019 winner of the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award from the Austrian Economics Center, send me emails from some info address? Nope. Right from [email protected].

So, when you have your newsletter, set up the technical stuff correctly so people know who the email is coming from.

And make sure you only have people on your list who have consented to being put on your list.

That way, nobody is muttering to themselves, “Andrea Bassett? Who is that? When did I sign up for this newsletter? Did I sign up for it?”

[By the way, I have a monthly newsletter, Secrets from an Executive Ghostwriter, that goes straight to your inbox. You can get that by adding your name and email here: https://www.redsailwriters.com/newsletter-signup/]
