John Bryant- Inspiration and Example to Us All
Who have you known who’s inspirational, fun, always good humoured, decent, highly respected and capable?
The first person I think of is Gentleman Journalist John Bryant 25 April 1944 – 30 April 2020. ?His inspirational life was recently celebrated at St Bride’s Church Fleet Street. For obvious reasons it wasn’t possible to do this before.
Proud to say he was my friend and have happy memories of us running with Thames Hare and Hounds through Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common. We laughed a lot and he’d make a small comment like ‘head up’ which made a big impact. We also ran through the Australian Outback where we decided we weren’t very fond of venomous snakes being up close and personal.
John's a former Editor in Chief of Telegraph Newspapers, Editor of?The European, Editor of the Sunday Correspondent, Deputy Editor of The Times and Executive Editor of the Daily Mail.?He is an Oxford Blue, former county champion, British Universities International, coach to Olympic athlete Zola Budd and a long-time captain of the world's oldest cross-country running club, the Thames Hare and Hounds. He completed 29 London Marathons. He is the author of classic accounts of the breaking of the?Four Minute Mile?(he was closely involved with the major players) and the?London Marathon?(which he helped establish with Chris Brasher).
His peak competitive running was cut short when a car hit him whilst running. He was told he’d walk with a limp if he was lucky and never run again. Before long he was back doing marathons and helping others achieve their potential with Thames Hare and Hounds.

There are many things inspirational about John here are just a few:
?? A modest man with a great sense of humour, quick to laugh and slow to judge.
?? Very good at seeing and understanding other people’s perspectives.
?? A dedicated runner who helped so many people do things they didn’t think they could.
?? His commitment and pride in this family
?? Someone was very driven- worked hard but never to my knowledge was unpleasant to anyone and highly respected by his colleagues- so many of whom he greatly helped.
??♂?Sometimes when I’m sleep deprived and struggling on an ultra-run I see his shadow out of the corner of my eye and hear those words ‘Head up’
Our world is poorer without him but richer because he was here.??

2 年What a fantastic tribute to John Bryant, who I had not come across before. I have to say that you have been an inspiration to me since I met you all those years ago after being in the audience of one of your presentations, and subsequently and hired you for a key note. Men like you and John are made of sterner stuff! Keep on keepin on! Chris Moon MBE
