Who? What? How? Why? ChatGPT

ChatGPT

I’m attempting to be more “relevant” on LinkedIn- (thanks Jess Cervellon ). In doing so, I am inodiated with ChatGPT articles, so I needed to learn more. ?I have no idea what any of it is, so here is my best shot at making it user-friendly. I am also looking for feedback on what I got right, and what is totally wrong! (I’m looking at you Jennifer Kaehms )

?So, ?grab your Patagonia vest, order an IPA, and get some new stickers for your MacBook, 'cause we are going on a ChatGPT adventure.

What is it?

ChatGPT?(Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer). It's a chatbot, (a robot that is trained to talk with people, typically customers on a website) that spits out human-like responses in literal seconds (Natural Language Processing or NLP)

?Who owns it?

Developed by OpenAI- no surprise- a Bay Area tech company???

How does it work?

It is unique in that it uses two different learning models to gain answers and feedback, both trained by human trainers ranking responses and feeding the “brains” of the chatbot.

Learning models:

1.???Supervised Learning- There is one input and one output . There is a defined answer key, so the model is trained with the correct answer.?

2.???Reinforcement Learning- A step up from Supervised Learning. ?There is an input, but various outputs. It keeps learning and is trained with a reward. The more rewards, the more it learns, and the best solution received the maximum reward.

Why are people using it?

I tried to log in and see how it works, but it’s at capacity, and not accepting any new users at the moment, so I found some very relevant, and important examples.

This article written by Arjun Gullbadhar claims that ChatGPT can create various endings to Game of Thrones. Thank God, because I’m still pissed about the real one. Bran? REALLY?

Miguel Piedrafita shows us how ChatGPT can help you break into someone’s house?!?

On a more serious note, below are some great use cases from Colin Baird from medium.com

1.???Email Replies:?ChatGPT can be used to generate personalized and engaging responses to emails, saving time and ensuring that important messages are responded to promptly and professionally. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “What is a polite and professional way to respond to this email request?”

2.???Document Generation:?ChatGPT can be used to generate documents, such as reports, presentations, and proposals, by simply providing a few key details and letting ChatGPT do the rest. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “Can you generate a report on our quarterly sales figures with charts and graphs?”

3.???Data Analysis:?ChatGPT can be used to analyze large amounts of data and identify key trends and insights, helping teams make better data-driven decisions. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “What are the key trends in our sales data over the past year?”

4.???Customer Service:?ChatGPT can be used to handle common customer inquiries and provide timely and accurate responses, freeing up customer service representatives to focus on more complex and challenging issues. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “What is the best way to handle a customer complaint about a faulty product?”

5.???Project Management:?ChatGPT can be used to manage project tasks and deadlines, keeping team members informed and on track to meet important milestones and deadlines. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “What are the next steps for our current project and when are they due?”

6.???Business Ideation & Planning:?ChatGPT can also be used to generate new business ideas by providing a few details about the industry and market, and letting ChatGPT generate potential concepts and ideas. This can help entrepreneurs and business leaders generate creative and innovative ideas for new products, services, and ventures. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “Can you generate business ideas for a new software service in the healthcare industry?”

7.???Code Generation and Debugging:?ChatGPT can also be used to generate code and identify and fix errors in existing code. By providing a few details about the desired functionality, ChatGPT can generate working code that can be customized and refined by a developer. Additionally, ChatGPT can be used to debug code by identifying and providing suggestions for fixing common coding errors and bugs. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “Can you generate a function to calculate the average of a list of numbers, and also identify any syntax errors in the following code?”

8.???Technical Tutorials:?ChatGPT can be used to generate technical tutorials and documentation, providing step-by-step instructions for using various software and tools. This can save time and improve the accuracy and quality of technical tutorials, making it easier for users to learn and understand complex concepts and procedures. For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “Can you provide a tutorial on how to use the XYZ software, including screenshots and clear instructions for each step?”

My thoughts:

As a former teacher, all I can think about is how kids are going to be using this to generate their homework. “Hey chatbot- write me a 4-paragraph academic essay on the positive and negative effects of urbanization”. I did read that Turnitin is working on a solution for this. Kristin Van Gompel, Ed.D. I'm sure can confirm.

As a training and development professional, the technical training I manage and create could be totally automated (see example 8 above. ?? SOPs with a ton of screenshots) I do worry about the use of avatars in training. If you know me, you know I hate avatar training, however, I do feel this could lead to some awesome advancements in L&D.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  • What do you think about Chat GPT?
  • How will it help/hurt your industry?
  • Did this article help you understand the basics?
  • What did I get right, what did I get wrong?

I loved that you took a stab without actually trying it. E for excellent effort. The more we talk about it, the more likely we’ll #getit.

Yes, Maggie DeAngelis, Turnitin developed a solution to detect AI which will be released in April: https://www.turnitin.com/press/turnitin-announces-ai-writing-detector-and-ai-writing-resource-center-for-educators?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=linkedin_company&utm_medium=Turnitin We also have a site for educators looking for ways to combat student misuse of AI in their classrooms. We're dropping a hot set of new resources to this site early next month: https://www.turnitin.com/resources/academic-integrity-in-the-age-of-AI
