Who are we.what is that we stand for

Sometimes there are these free issue thoughts that makes little swoops and swirls in my mind. They have nothing to do with work or my day-to-day life and probably does not make much sense. Like, thoughts of a perfect world where there is no hunger, every child gets a ‘childhood’, every voiceless stray gets a sweet home or India wins the next World Cup Cricket!!

I don’t know if the dream of this utopic world will ever come true, but the imagination itself makes me happy and a sense of fulfillment engulfs me. This sense of fulfillment, I have noticed, has got nothing to do with my personal gains and wins or loses but it has a texture of completeness to it. It carries a kind of security within itself that makes me think that it’s time we can stop running from the unknown monster that chases us, even as we sleep – loans and EMIs, future of us and our kids, sickness, and death etc. I find myself releasing a deep breath of peace and tranquility.

What is it?

Probably a collective sense of togetherness and shared life.

I wonder if we are conscious of the fact that we all live a shared life. The realization hit me on the day the first lockdown was lifted, and I went down to my society pathway for a walk at around 8am. Pre-lockdown, 8am was a busy time – joggers, young mothers out for a walk, toddlers dragging their feet to pre-schools, professionals hurrying to their transport, housekeeping staff doing their daily routine etc. ?But that day it was completely deserted. Not a soul in sight. It was an eerie feeling as I quickly cut short my walk and rushed home. I realized that even during such walks, when I am plugged in and do not usually talk to people around, I am sharing space, and not just space in the garden, but space within me and of my life. The alone-ness brought forth the realization that we live in a collective sense of togetherness that we call humanity and that day, when it was missing, I felt like a two-dimensional sheet of a paper, fluttering around with the depth missing!

My – shall I call it ‘question’ or jiggyasa or inquisitiveness is that, if that space is so vital to our survival, we need to put in more effort to clean it up Why can’t a part of our routine-life be, to make it a better place? A step towards our inner utopic world, and I am sure each one of us carry their own version of a utopic world.

Maybe we will not be able to eradicate poverty, and such said misery from the whole world, and its ok. I think we don’t have to worry about the world. But can we worry about one little soul in one lifetime? Can we step up to extend a hand, a smile and some of the blessings and bounties we have received from the universe? Can we bring ourselves to look into the eye of just one more person and make him feel that we share the same space of togetherness and that he belongs?

Just thoughts really, random thoughts. But a quest to do my part and contribute to this collective sense of togetherness and shared life!!??
