For the longest time, I always prided myself on my ability to compartmentalize, especially because I work within the family business.?
As a second-generation entrepreneur, it wasn’t until the summer of 2015 that I finally got over myself and decided I wanted to lean into my skills as a caseworker and combine them with my true passions and purpose. I wanted out of the corporate human services/ not-for-profit world and felt ready to step into my unique abilities. I wanted to take those transferable skills and utilize them with those who were striving to do the same as myself; be the happiest, healthiest and wealthiest they could be.?
It wasn’t shortly after that I brought this revelation to my father, who as most of you know is a super successful business and mindset coach. Little did I know that he had recently landed an incredible business opportunity and as I joked with him, “Finally got a place for me?” his response was, “Actually, I do…”?

Like anything, the awesomeness of working within a family business doesn’t fall short of its challenges at times.

So many of my clients’ giggle to this day, as I refer in my calls, to my father as Steve. HA! When talking business, he’s ‘Steve’, when talking about personal matters and family, he’s Dad. This allows me to feel clarity and grounded in the different hats that I wear, avoiding as best possible, the muddy waters that are often inevitable when working with family. This continues to be incredibly helpful for me as I lean into the different roles that I play in my life.?
The upside to this skill set is that it helps lead us to a more balanced emotional state and a higher sense of resiliency in high-stress situations. When we are able to table our emotions, thoughts and feelings, we tend to be able to focus more on the tasks at hand, thus improving overall focus, efficiencies and productivity within our business.
Now here comes the tricky part – the downside to compartmentalization within business is our tendency to not reflect back on those situations to resolve whatever was going on for us in the moment. This can look like a disagreement with a colleague or leadership; a client ghosting us etc.?
We want to be cognizant of when we lean too much into compartmentalization to avoid dealing with difficult emotions, so to avoid repressed emotions turning into long-term emotional and psychological effects/consequences. When we don't address our feelings (putting a name to them!) we soon become detached from them, hindering our ability to heal and thus, evolve.?
