Who is UNA? What you can expect from our nannies.

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Heward, and I am the managing director and co-founder of UNA, formally known as the Northern Nanny. 

Today's blog is basically going to be shedding some light on the mysteries of finding out which childcare is right for you. Having worked in childcare now for over six years, what you quickly find out is that it's so confusing. There are so many different terms and terminologies like babysitter, nanny, au pair, childminder, nurseries, maternity nurse, mothers' care, mothers' health, and many more. It can feel like you’re wading your way through so much, in trying to find out which one is right for you. 

When we came up with the new name UNA, I really wanted to put all those other things to the side, and create something simple, and flexible, that really works for families, and from that, we created UNA. I want you to understand what an UNA is, what it does, and why it is the best childcare solution or potentially the childcare solution that is exactly what you're looking for. 

First of all, we know that it can be a bit of a minefield. There are many different types of childcare. So, the first thing you need to do as a parent is ascertain your needs. For example, what sort of hours are you looking for in a week? How many children do you have? What is your budget? What are the appropriate childcare scenarios for your family? Do you sometimes get enough care through friends and relatives or have you got no support at all? 

From a childcare perspective, the way you make my job easy is by having a real good sense of what it is that you're looking for when you start looking for it. Because there are so many types that you might have tried, and you have tested a few things, I need you to be thinking that you tried this and that, but still didn't work. Why didn't it work? You need to understand before you look for the next thing, and why that one didn't work for you. 

Now with an au pair who tends to be somebody who lives in, babysitting tends to be evening and weekends, and childminding tends to be the one we get confused with the most. In reality, nannying and childminding are very different. A nanny looks after your children in your own home, and that is their sole charge. Whereas, a childminder takes multiple families' children into a care setting that they provide within their own home. These two things are very different but often very easily confused. 

I suppose that my main concern is to understand whether you're looking for a nanny or a childminder because the price is very different. That also means that you need to consider your budget. Also, the type of care you're gonna be getting is very different. The nanny is one-to-one care. It is a kind of bespoke care. It's personalised to your family, your expectations, and your needs. 

So, who is UNA? UNA is a nanny. UNA comes to you. She works within your home, with your family, and meeting your expectations. She is flexible, confident, and safe. She provides great early years care. The experience should be great! She is easy to get along with. The service itself that she provides is easy and flexible. Again, above everything, UNA is putting you and your needs at the heart of her job.
