Who Taught You to Cook BBQ?

In these challenging times of sheltering in place and social distancing, I find myself enjoying making a great meal more frequently than in the past. Good food - comfort food - has tremendous psychological value. Plus- I enjoy the process, especially BBQ.

Now, I usually realize- after the fact- how much time and effort I just spent to cook a brisket, ribs, or pulled pork. But it doesn't matter. I enjoy the process- the marinating, the fire tending, the temperature checks, the smoke, the beer, and ultimately, the meal.

My dad taught me how to cook burgers back in 1967. Yes, I'm that old. But now I've had years and years to learn learn what not to do, and the things that bear repeating. Dad never ventured much past burgers (his secret ingredient was wine), but he inspired me to greater heights. It was a great experience as an 11 year-old to watch my dad prepare the meat and grill the burgers, and eventually do it on my own. The teaching experiences we can look back on as adults take on added meaning, usually more nuanced than just teaching a task. It's the involvement that matters. The time spent with your dad or mom.

I hope you have some recipe that you teach your kids to make. You will be surprised over time (especially when they become adults) how meaningful that experience is to them. So this weekend, teach your kids how to cook a burger. You won't regret it.
