Now, for the wrap-up, Part 3 - "Who is Steve Monroe?"
BRIAN: In your book, “Selling to Builders” - it ends with a chapter that includes the section , “Romancing the Customer Begins at Home.” I think the work-life relationship for builders (some of the busiest people I know) can become very strained… what do you suggest?
STEVE: As someone who was on the road much of the time when selling to builders and when not travelling was directing a large staff or attending a local HBA meeting. . . what was missing from the mix was time with family. The neatest trend among younger builders is that they are placing soccer practice, a lacrosse match, orchestra concert in front of builder-business. Good for them and a challenge for local HBAs to deal with gathering the future leadership together and get them involved.
BRIAN: You wrote a great little holiday story and put it in a book called, “The Legend of the Christmas Monkey.” Tell me how this story came about.
STEVE: The story derived from a casual visit to a gift shop in the arts district of Winston-Salem, when I spotted a sock monkey. I turned to my friend, Peggy Lyle, and said “Peggy, you are of course familiar with the legend of The Christmas Monkey?” to which she replied, “No.” My wife then popped my left arm and said, “you are on, brother!” That night the Legend was born.
The second edition is expanded and contains three stories instead of just one. More artist renderings. The original story has been expanded as well when I added our daughter getting MS and her meeting Ramsey Carpenter, a Miss America contestant, who also has MS.
BRIAN: For each book that you have written, you give back a portion of your proceeds to a select charity. What are the charities and why did you choose them?
