Challenge

Many construction schedulers dream of starting their own consultancy but feel overwhelmed by the complexities. In our conversation with Diane Bragoni, RA, PSP, PMI-SP, PMP from CPM Schedule Solutions LLC , we delve into key questions: How do you identify your niche in a competitive market? Where do you find your first clients? How can you ensure steady growth without compromising quality?

Key Takeaways

  • Identify Your Specific Niche Focus on solving one specific problem for a particular client type. As Diane emphasized, narrowing your focus helps you become an expert in that area.
  • Leverage Existing Relationships Reach out to former colleagues and clients who know your work. Personal connections, as Diane suggested, can open doors and provide your first opportunities.
  • Deliver Exceptional Service Prioritize stellar performance and build strong relationships. Exceptional work leads to repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals.
  • Grow Deliberately Expand your business slowly and thoughtfully. Ensure you have the resources to maintain quality as you take on more clients.
  • Embrace Continuous Learning Be prepared to learn new skills, especially in business management and client relations. The willingness to adapt and grow is crucial for success.
  • Hire for Character, Train for Skill When expanding your team, focus on personal qualities like humility and eagerness to learn. Technical skills can be taught, but character is paramount.

Tactical Takeaway

Considering starting your own company? Write down the one specific problem you can solve for one specific person. Reach out to the person and pitch them your idea.

I do not believe anyone matriculated from a recognized institution with a degree or diploma in scheduling. Many apprenticed as a recognized trade, or obtained a professional engineering designation. Many simply learned how to use a scheduling software and called themselves a Scheduler (regardless of education, knowledge, or experience). In addition, without a designated Planner or Controls profession, scheduling becomes a scapegoat if (when) projects go off the rails. With the right personality, however, (artistic, right brain, creative, outgoing, confident, competent, communicator, facilitator), and a proven methodology, a so-called Scheduler can add significant value to a Project Controls Team (as the Lead, or SME Consultant) ??
