According to Forbes: "Content marketing is a marketing technique of creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and acquire a clearly defined audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action."
Content marketing is a cost-effective way to engage with your audience and increase brand awareness. It comprise of blogs, articles, inforgraphics, videos, testimonials and case studies, among other things.
I see many people distinguishing between content marketing and traditional marketing as if the former is now stuff that has bloomed out of the internet in the 2000s. NO! It isn’t so.
Well, that is the reason why one should not simply follow resources blindly. Content marketing has been there as long as there has been marketing. Any content, that goes out into selling or fetching product inquiries are considered as part and parcel of content marketing which could include both digital as well as non-digital (or the so called traditional) marketing strategies.
A copy that was written to sell a biscuit in the 1950s is content.
A blog entry written to brainwash a generation of people to believe that green tea helps lose weight is also content.
Both these are content. Now marketing your product based on this is content marketing.
How content marketing is integrated with other marketing tactics:
- Social media marketing (SMM): Content marketing strategy comes before your social media strategy.
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) : Search engines reward businesses that publish quality, consistent content. More about this in my previous post here
- PR: Successful PR strategies address issues readers care about, not their business.
- Mass Media: For media to work, you need great content behind it.
- Inbound marketing: Content is key to driving inbound traffic and leads.
- Influencer marketing: Without right content influencer can make or break the brand so it is for sure an extension of content marketing.
In a world where people are bombarded with 3,000 unwanted marketing messages every day, content marketing is a welcoming change. Professionals who should leverage the power of content marketing include B2B marketers, PR, sales, bloggers/influencers, entrepreneurs and brands.

7 年Mass Media: For media to work, you need great content behind it. That on it's own is a topic that needs to be explored. We tend to lose out on coverage because we mostly focus on protocols. Sometimes even with good and worthy content, we fail to package our stories to grab interest of the reader. That is usual influenced by the angle we choose, taking into consideration our target audience, and the agenda we wish to set.
