Who saw that coming...?
A sunny day in London - March 2020

Who saw that coming...?

Seems hard to imagine it was almost 4 months ago that we had our last face to face engagements: our last RTT class in London, our last client meeting, our last hosted event, and our last team meeting over brunch at the Horseguards Hotel... figuring out if we could sustain our business and, if so, how were we going to adapt.

Turned out to be quite simple really, we “ate our own dog food” as Bryce would say - I prefer “drank our own champagne!” - and we applied a little Red Team Thinking to the problem.

5 hours later we had draft plan that would enable us to pivot to a full online offering and, hopefully, survive as a business.

We then headed for a final curry together before Bryce flew back to San Francisco and I headed home on the train....and my, how the world then changed!

Let’s not pretend that things will change if we keep doing the same things - Albert Einstein

Since then, we’ve set up a slick online delivery capability (not the Uber Eats kind), allowing us to continue to deliver support to several clients, of particular note and reward has been helping the NHS and CDC. We've also been able to deliver numerous online training classes, which have proven as effective, if not more so, than running them in a classroom setting. A major training highlight was last week, when we had a group of 9 awesome individuals from around the globe achieve their RTT Certification, having completed all 5 of our current course offerings. Awarded Certified Red Team Thinker - and the first step to become an accredited RTT Coach.

VUCA is now a reality, and COVID-19, while bringing many threats, has also created many opportunities. We’ve evolved continually, responding to client demand, student feedback, and the changing environment, and we continue to do so, whilst helping our clients do the same.

Change is the only constant. Adapt or die, someone also once said.

Along the way we’ve gained an amazing following of like-minded people who are contrarian, passionate, driven and, most importantly, care deeply about doing the right thing. Just the kind of people you want on your team. And the community continues to grow...

None of us is smarter than all of us.

So what have we learned:

  • Your business can survive and thrive if you’re prepared to take calculated risks, staying “as-is” rarely works.
  • You must adapt and evolve.
  • Online delivery has proven to be way more effective than we thought - better in many ways.
  • Mural and Zoom are an awesome combo when used well.
  • Remote working can bring huge cost savings - travel, hotels, time, carbon footprint.
  • Help others wherever you can - pay it forward.
  • Online, the world is a small place with easy global reach.
  • If you have a good idea, share it far and wide.
  • Give a f*ck - if it matters then care about it.

Red Teaming the pandemic as it's unfolded has offered an incredibly rich perspective. I still remember the conversations on day two of the course after the pandemic was finally declared on the evening of the first day.
