Who will save the planet from melting? Recruiters of course :-p

Who will save the planet from melting? Recruiters of course :-p

Let's start at the macro level - private investment is rushing into climatetech (aka clean tech 2.0, green tech, innovation to keep Earth from melting). Pitch book confirms "investors have closed as many climate-focused funds in 2021 as the previous five years combined. "

There were already > 1k startup finding deals between 2019 and 2020 . Those totals will be much higher once we review the data from 2021. So it is safe to assume that there are thousands of climatetech startups flush with funding and needing to scale their teams in order to scale their technology in order to help Earth maintain our carbon balance.

Yay! help has arrived, we can all go back to what we were doing. Not so fast... Where are all these people going to come from to build these companies?

Most of us can count on 1 or maaaaaaybe 2 hands climatetech companies that have grown to thousands of employees. So where are all these people going to come from?

People will have to change industries. Change is hard and slow, but it has happened. Over the last 20 years some of the world's best and brightest have moved from Wall Street and Management Consulting to Software and Startups. That change has been slow and is still in process, but already the world has moved on. So how do we accelerate the movement to climatetech?

Long-term, we do this through education, learning, and community.

These are some amazing resources that have sprung up in support of the climatetech industry:

  • Work on Climate - active slack group promoting climate career transitions
  • My Climate Journey - educational podcast and supportive slack community for learning about the ecosystem, startups, and careers
  • Climate Tech VC - leading newsletter on climate and innovation with news about funds, funding, market maps, and startups
  • Chasing a Job with Purpose - one person's story about being intentional and methodical to find a job that you are passionate about

These resources and communities will build momentum that will grease the wheels of the talent transition as the world moves through an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. But we need sustainable jet fuel now!

Recruiters, this is your call to action. You have superpowers in: shepherding talent as it crosses industries, building teams, helping individuals overcome barriers to achieve their career and life goals, identifying out-of-the-box talent, creating urgency that drives results, empowering people to win at work.

Short-term, the world needs recruiters to use superpowers right now.

This isn't just climatetech, the great (resignation/ re-evaluation/ re-hiring) has led to more people than ever before being primed to make a career change. So there are more jobs for recruiters globally right now that there are for software engineers. With this demand, you write your own story. What type of superhero will you be?
