Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao by unanimous decision from the judges (but not the viewing public). The boxing “match of the century” brought in an estimated $300 million from pay-per-view alone, in addition to the $74 million in ticket sales, with viewers charged $100 a pop and cable and satellite systems buckling under the pressure. But it also demonstrated the old business model’s limits in this brave new digital world: many caught the match, for free, on Twitter’s live streaming app Periscope or competitor Meerkat, thanks to viewers holding up their phones to their TV. Live events were TV's one argument against Netflix and the like – and live sports, whether you watch them or not, are why your cable bill is so high. Now that is threatened too. Even Twitter CEO Dick Costolo boasted of periscope stealing the show – HBO and Showtime are readying the legal papers.

Dave Goldberg, CEO of Survey Monkey, died suddenly on Friday night. He was 47 and a father of two. A beloved figure in Silicon Valley, Goldberg was the husband of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and the essential second half of the Lean In equation. Goldberg created digital music service Launch, which he sold to Yahoo, was an active angel investor and a lover of poker. Friend Jason Calacanis shares this telling anecdote:
Some players at the poker table will never show you what cards they had after they beat you. It makes sense. If you show people what cards you beat them with they can start unwinding your game, (…) Goldie would always flash you his hand, or tell you later over a drink, how he beat you. He cared more about your feeling in defeat than his victory in the next hand.”
And Goldberg even found time to contribute several thoughtful and generous posts to LinkedIn Influencer. RIP.

More than 5,800 migrants were rescued and 10 bodies recovered in the Mediterranean over the weekend, according to the Italian coast guard. Desperate migrants continue to reach for European shores by the thousands, looking for jobs and a safer life. Nearly 900 died when a single ship capsized two weeks ago, which prompted the EU to triple funding for rescue operations.

Ten days on, the death toll from Nepal’s earthquake continues to climb, now at 7,200. And while a thoughtful media presence helps bring in donations, the last thing the Nepalese need is insensitive, sensationalist coverage or being used in a posturing war between India, China and Pakistan for who gets the “best neighbor” award. Twitter users in Nepal think so too and trended #GoHomeIndianMedia over the weekend. Indian social media responded with #DontComeBackIndianMedia. Lest you should think only your country reviles its journalists…

Warren Buffett “held court” Saturday in Omaha at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting. The Oracle faced criticism over his alliance with 3G, the private equity firm with which he signed three deals, most recently Heinz. 3G is known for making unforgiving cost-cutting moves in the company it acquires – moves, Buffet retorted, that had helped the businesses perform “exceedingly well.” Some shareholders fear that means BH could be moving away from the fair business principles that have made its long-term success and reputation. Buffett also addressed the company’s future without him, 84, or vice chairman Charles Munger, 91. (Read on here for some local color from the meeting.)

McDonald’s is unveiling its new strategy today. CEO Steve Easterbook, two months into the job, will make an early morning announcement on “the initial steps of our turnaround plan,” the company said, and take calls with analysts and media. The fast food chain’s net income was down 15% last year and perhaps worse yet, it's losing the battle of cultural relevance against more popular fast casual chains like Chipotle and Shake Shack.

Cider was the new beer, now mead is the new cider. Production at meaderies went up 128% between 2013 and 2014, reports Quartz’s Deena Shanker The drink of the gods, the stuff of Beowulf and boar banquets, was apparently helped by its prominent appearance in Game of Thrones (just don’t choke). What will be mead’s undoing? I’m calling it: butterbeer.

England has a new princess. The baby has yet to be named, but bookmakers are betting on Charlotte or Alice. No, there’s really no angle to justify including it in business headlines. Except I bet you it’s going to come up at the coffee machine this morning.

9 年Obviously FM was afraid to loose. What MP prepared for the fight is the hit & run strategy of FM, but FM reversed his strategy to hit & hug which MP not expected. Who won the fight? Let's watch the recorded fight, then decide. Judges scoring? No one is perfect! But, I hate politics in sports.
