Who is the Product Owner and what are its 4 main duties?

The product owner is known for representing the employer or the business representative on agile development teams. Product Owner exist in Scrum – as one of the Agile frameworks -.

A product owner is a person who decides about features, prioritizes them, and determines when a feature could be added to the product and delivered to the client.

A Product Owner acts as the liaison between the development team and the customer. Working closely with the two groups ensures that the product team understands the customer’s needs.

In the sprint planning session, the PO refers the customer’s requirements to the development team after prioritization and assures the client that it will deliver the most value in the shortest possible time.

The product owner has a duty to;

  • Defines the features and capabilities expected by the customer
  • Specify their prioritization
  • Decide whether to accept or reject a result
  • Consider the customer’s credibility and pass on their feedback to the product development team at various times.

The product owner should turn the development team’s work into the customer as much as possible. In the meantime should work with Scrum Master and the development team (as other parts of the Scrum team).

The product is always owned by one person, and in Scrum, there is no such thing as a product owner’s committee.

For PO to succeed, the entire organization must respect their opinion. Therefore, it is expected that the product blog will always be organized and prioritized by the product owner.

A strong PO should be aware of business strategies, design, analysis, customer relationships, and project management concepts.

What are the responsibilities of Product Oner?

The product owner is a leader in many areas of product development and strives to achieve product strategies to align team goals with the procedure performed.

PO must convey the product vision properly to the development team.

The PO must fully consider the product stakeholder relationship and ensure that all Scrum team members know it.

By constantly creating a product roadmap, PO keeps the development team, and the scrum team informed of their future goals.

Managing the remaining backlog, prioritizing, and sorting it is one of the main tasks of the product owner.

It is the responsibility of the PO to control the scope of work that can be done on the product.

Accurate conversion of customer requirements into understandable user stories for the product team and mentioning the terms of acceptance is one of the most important tasks: the product owner’s responsibility and prioritizing and sorting the backlog.

PO is not required to attend Scrum daily sessions and can attend them at their discretion if necessary.

But other scrum sessions such as reviews, scheduling, and retro sessions must be held with PO.

The product owner should always be available to cover the needs and ambiguities of the development team and, if necessary, work with ScrumMaster to achieve this.

Product owner vs. product manager

Product manager and PO sometimes overlap in definitions. However, PO and product managers have differences in their plans. At the highest level, the product manager must formulate the product’s strategic goals and the PO as a more tactical role in achieving those goals.

The product manager is actively involved in setting strategic goals and gaining market and ongoing support. In addition, they are responsible for product marketing, sales team support, budgeting, long-term forecasting, and customer care.

With proper communication with the customer and the product manager, the PO must ensure that acceptable values are delivered to the customer at the right time.

The need for a demo/review meeting must notify the product owner to the Scrum team.
