“Who is this Prince?
NOT GIVING A TOSS~~THE ULTIMATE LIBERTY.
Is that a Greek restaurant?
As with everything to do with Begg, a story goes with this song.
Sometime in the mid-late 70’s, I got a call from a girl in Flint, MI.
Don’t go there.
Ever.
This girl said: Begg, every girl has ever dated you hates you guts–no need here for details.
Anyway, this girl says “Despite my, most deserved animus for you, you’ve got to come here to see this singer before he goes to the Moon.
Hers was not a request, but rather a summons to appear–in Flint, MI
Don’t go there.
Ever
We ended up in a tawdry local bar that stank of stale, spilled beer and from guys pissing on the floor and used cigarettes.
At this point, we must mention juxtapositions, yes, juxtapositions
In the very midst of this working class beer hall were all these Beggesque guys in slicked
back hair and nice, but very flashy suits.
These with Hollywood recording agents on the prowl.
In Flint. Don’t go there.
EVER
In a rundown bar with Begg and this girl who said to me; “Just you wait.”
A band came on a small stage in this trash bar–much, I imagine, like the Beatles and the Stones and others started in.
Bouncing into the center came this tiny colored kid wearing a girl’s silk nightgown, open, a corset, black tap pants, garters, stockings and little 2″ black pumps.
I said to myself “Well Begg, this pretty much defines juxtaposition.
The colored boy ripped off the silk gown, revealing a tight build, about 95 pounds and a 19″ waist.
Yes, 19″.
Then, a show began that was simply surreal.
The boy was a local no-body called Prince–his name from Baptism.
Prince had no fear.
None.
Yes, he went shortly up to Valhalla~~and you know the rest.
The thing about Prince–besides his magnificent talent was that he had absolutely no interest in the “rules attendant upon being a star.”
He ignored everyone in Valhalla and did what he wanted and boy what he did.
Looking back, I think of Prince and how much like Begg and Trump he was.
None of us care what anyone says or attempts to tell us to do.
As evidence of this demand to be free that he shares with Trump and Begg, prince recorded his first song, mind you at a time before the world fell completely off a cliff into a cavern of crudity.
The first song from Prince was called “It’s Soft and Wet”~~which it sure is, but this was wayyy out there in 1978. The agents didn’t want to publish.
Prince didn’t care, AS I don’t care. As Trump doesn’t care. What other men say to do.
We do what we want~~hang the criticism, hang the consequences.
It is the ultimate liberty.
Not caring a damn.
Which brings us to today’s song, my favorite of all Prince’s work.
