Who is my current Mentor and what is he doing for me?

Ignace Paderewski, the talented Polish pianist, arrived in a small Western town about noon one day and decided to take a walk in the afternoon.  While strolling he heard a piano and, following the sound, came to a house on which was a sign reading:

Miss Jones, Piano Lessons 25 cents an hour

Pausing to listen he heard the young woman trying to play one of Chopin’s nocturnes, and not succeeding very well.

Paderewski walked up to the house and knocked.  Miss Jones came to the door and recognized him at once.  Delighted, she invited him in.  He sat down and played the nocturne as only Paderewski could, afterwards spending an hour in correcting her mistakes. Miss Jones thanked him and he departed.

Some months afterward he returned to the same town, and again took the same walk.

He soon came to the home of Miss Jones, and looking at the sign he read:

Miss Jones, Piano Lessons $1.00 an Hour

(Pupil of Paderewski)

My first mentor was Mr. Davis.  I thought Mr. Davis would be my mentor for life!  However, he had different thoughts.  I remember him saying something ground shaking to me. “You start off with one mentor until you out grow him and dump him.  Then you move unto another mentor until you out grow him and dump him too.”  If you choose a good mentor then they are constantly learning new things and willing to pass it on to you…the lessons may slow down, but they shouldn’t stop.

I find that the best mentor relationships have a specific review date where both parties will reflect on the relationship and agree on whether there is still a substantial amount to be learned from the mentor.

So, where do you stand with the mentor in your life; are you at the beginning, at the middle, at the end (even pass the end).  It is important to have someone who has more experience and can share their wisdom with you around how to increase your value at home, at work, and at the bank.
