Who are the Math Bridge Builders?

Do you believe that every person can succeed in Math? At first, I thought it sounded too good to be true, but now I strongly believe in it. This is my story with Math.

During my elementary years, Math was a nightmare. The teacher was like an evil witch who couldn't develop either a good relationship with her students or create a positive-safe learning environment. Things changed 180 degrees when I reached 6th grade. This moment changed my thinking of math, my whole life, and my future when my NEW math teacher asked me to help a friend in understanding the properties of triangles. And guess what? I discovered back then that I could help others overcome their mathematical problems. We both celebrated the Aha moment with our eyes shining. Back then, the Aha moment flipped my mind and made me recognize to what extent I love teaching math to students and teachers as well. Things have never changed! Now, the Aha moment from both students and teachers is the best motivation I can ever have.

Ultimately, my love of teaching mathematics became my guide in my career. After spending 16 years training PYP teachers on developing their instructional practices, deepening their understanding of Mathematics, and empowering them to develop a growth mindset in Math Education, I created the Math Teachers as Bridge Builders to proceed in my mission.

Math Teachers as Bridge Builders is a website produced to empower Math teachers, provide them with tips, strategies, resources, and professional development opportunities, and help students and teachers to succeed in Math.

In addition to building bridges with educators around the world, Math Teachers as Bridge Builders aim to empower teachers and support them to:

  • make connections between the concepts within a Math strand,
  • build bridges between the Math strands, and connect Math to life;
  • build the bridge between teaching and learning;
  • build the bridges between concrete, representational, and abstract thinking;
  • build the bridge between skills, knowledge, and understanding;
  • value students thinking and build the bridge to their success in Math.

This is a great initiative, Samia, and needed. I think there is too much (hidden/unconscious) elitism among mathematics educators and elitists do not build sturdy bridges!! [Today I'm publishing an article on elitism in maths!] I look fwd to your articles.
