Who makes the the better social worker?

Hello Linkedin family??

Time flies, doesn't it? Last weekend, I had the pleasure of exploring London, immersing myself in its rich culture and indulging in some delicious new foods. From Brazilian vegetable soup to beef coxhina, my taste buds were treated to a delightful experience. Taking that time for myself was much needed, especially after the past couple of weeks. But now, I'm back with another newsletter for you, and I've got some exciting updates to share...one of which is that my podcast has been ranked 2nd best social work podcast in the UK, so let's talk.

So, who makes the the best social worker?

This week I've been exploring the concept of being a wounded healer/wounded social worker. On this week's episode of Dear Social Worker Podcast we explore this topic in more detail.

We touched on 3 categories of being a wounded healer.

The healed, healing and unhealed worker

For example, some social workers being drawn to the field as a result of their own unhealed wounds, driven by a desire to advocate for others facing similar struggles. While those on the journey of healing, personal struggles serve as a wellspring of empathy, allowing for profound connections with children and families. Lastly, healed social workers may have traversed a path of self-discovery, confronting past traumas and vulnerabilities.

So who makes the best social worker?

The Unhealed Social Worker?

On the positive side, unhealed social workers may possess raw empathy and a deep understanding of the pain and challenges faced by their clients, often stemming from their own personal experiences. This can facilitate genuine connections and foster trust between the social worker and the individuals they serve. However, the limitations of being unhealed should not be overlooked. We discuss the risk of burnout and impact on children and families.

The Healing Social Worker?

Being a healing social worker entails both advantages and challenges within the field. One of the key benefits is the emphasis on self-awareness and resilience, however, moments of vulnerability may still arise. While being a healing social worker requires ongoing effort and self-reflection, it also offers the opportunity to make meaningful impacts and foster positive change in the lives of others.

A Healed Social Worker?

On the positive side, having undergone a significant journey of self-discovery and healing enables practitioners to approach their work with a profound sense of self-awareness and inner peace. However, it's important to acknowledge that even healed social workers may still encounter moments of vulnerability or triggers that can impact their effectiveness.

Who do you identify with most, the unhealed, healing or healed profile?

In the end, in my view it's not the absence of wounds that defines a great social worker, but rather, the depth of healing they have embraced or willing to embrace along the way. I invite you to reflect on your own journey and listen to the full podcast episode. Click the photo below.
