I, like many safety & health practitioners, work closely with facilities managers in schools, the property industry and within organisations of all shapes and sizes.
They are the people who often make safety happen and I recently got to wondering if anyone is looking at the affects their role might have on them.
In this article I look at working at height (e.g. climbing vertical ladders in inappropriate footwear!) and everything from hazards associated with service yards to lone working and stress and fatigue.
Many FM's I have worked with have become friends and this is for you all. You do an amazing job and mine would be much harder without you but very occasionally you should stop and think about yourself too!

Hanging up my work boots and finally enjoying travel, people watching, and just maybe writing that book I've been promising to do for years through story telling!

It was good to know that someone was looking after my interests and making sure that any risk in what I was carrying out was minimized and that correct procedures were in place to protect staff, tenants and visitors to what was a tricky site. Those procedures we put in place served me well for many years (and we certainly had some very tricky situations to deal with!) until I hung up my boots and moved on to pastures new. Any Facilities Manager / Building Manager needs a Louise in my opinion!
