Who Likes Trains?
J. R. (Jack) Lindermuth
Librarian at Northumberland County (PA) Historical Society
Some of my earliest memories are the melancholy wail of a steam engine’s horn, the clackety-clack of iron wheels against the rails and the sharp scent of creosote on the cross ties. I grew up in a Pennsylvania railroading family. My dad, my grandfather, my great-grandfather and other family members were railroaders.
They, and men like them, inspired me to write a short history of railroading in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region. My intent was to offer a glimpse of the life of the men who worked in the industry and their families.
