Hello fleet and mobility players!

If you grew up in the United States in the 80’s, you probably remember when pickups were a lot smaller and there was a brief time when the big craze was to lower your mini-truck, customizing in a way that makes it quite difficult to get over speed bumps.

More than 30 years has passed since then and pickups have changed quite a bit, mainly getting bigger with time, even when considering the same exact model.

As you go farther south into South America, larger trucks are available but much less common than up North in the United States and Canada. To give you an idea of which models lead sales throughout the Americas, take a look at the brief list I have compiled below.

United States

Sales of the Ford F-Series, which includes the best-selling full-sized pickup F-150 as well as its larger siblings, topped 640,000 in 2022. In the first nine months of 2023, F-Series sales increased some 23% to 573,370 units. This makes it the bestselling truck in the United States for 46 consecutive years and the bestselling vehicle for 41 years. The US is by far the largest vehicle market in the Americas.

Argentina

Pickups are highly popular in the country, likely influenced by the large number of them manufactured in South America’s second largest vehicle market. Coming out on top in 2022 was the Toyota Hilux, a mid-sized pickup which boasted 24,628 units sold that year. This year, a total of 25,856 units were already sold by October. The Hilux is a more robust but less comfortable version of the Toyota Tacoma found in the U.S.

Brazil

Since 2021, the compact pickup Fiat Strada has outpaced all others. While 112,456 units were sold in 2022, the trend has continued this year with 86,638 units sold in the first nine months. Brazil is the second largest vehicle market in the Americas and the largest in Latin America.

Colombia

Just like Argentina, the best-selling pickup in South America’s third largest vehicle market in 2022 was the mid-sized Toyota Hilux. Approximately 4,800 units were sold that year and with 4,392 units sold between January and October this year, it looks like that number will be topped in 2023.

Mexico

In Latin America’s second largest vehicle market, the best-selling pickup in 2022 was the mid-sized Nissan NP300 (Navara), of which 40,427 units were sold (one in every five pickups). This model is quite similar to the slightly more expensive double-cab Nissan Frontier.

Meanwhile, the best-selling pick-ups worldwide in 2022?were:

1. Ford F-Series: 786,328 units

2. Chevrolet Silverado: 591,596 units

3. Toyota Hilux: 564,051 units

4. Ram Pickup: 545,423 units

5. Ford Ranger: 312,263 units

6. GMC Sierra: 301,557 units

7. Toyota Tacoma: 254,589 units

8. Isuzu D-Max: 50,196 units

9. Great Wall Wingle 5: 133,654 units

10. Fiat Strada: 119,468 units?

I like the Toyota Hilux or Tacoma and also the new F-150 Lightning (electric version) looks interesting, but there are many compelling models to choose from overall. Which one do you like, or is there another model not on the list that you prefer? Feel free to comment below or let me know about it in a private message.

Until next time,
