Who will lead the transition to sustainable ski tourism in the Alps?

Author: Maru?a Golu?a, (ZRC SAZU Anton Melik Geographical Institute)

Mountain resorts in the Alps are undergoing a transition that is not only driven by climate change. ZRC SAZU Anton Melik Geographical Institute and RAGOR Regional Development Agency convened a workshop in Kranjska Gora in November 2023 to explore the key drivers of change. While climate change is a key driver of change, stakeholders highlighted social factors as particularly important.

Kranjska Gora faces growing challenges, including overtourism and the conversion of residential areas into tourist accommodation. Rising property prices are driving away young people, eroding local identity and reducing the area to a mere backdrop for tourists. Investors often overlook local identity, further diluting the authenticity of the region.

Participants stressed the need for systemic interventions to preserve Kranjska Gora's local identity and provide opportunities for young people to thrive in their communities. They emphasised the crucial role of vibrant local communities in shaping authentic tourism experiences.

The sustainable transition of Alpine mountain resorts depends on the involvement of local communities and the empowerment of young residents. Partners in the TranStat project are eager to explore future scenarios and actions to promote sustainable transition.
