Who Killed the Webmaster?

Who Killed the Webmaster?

Early this year 2020, we asked our network of students, junior, and senior developers this question: What kind of developer are you?

While this result is expected in 2020, who remembers the frontier days of the web? The days when the webmaster was celebrated.

And because the webmaster generally had some knowledge in computer maintenance, he managed the entire IT department. From repair to web design to content creation.

He was an internet super-star. Not until technology and the web eventually hit equilibrium.

Today, a modern web application requires a diverse team of back-end developers, front-end developers, graphic artists, UI designers, database and systems administrators, search engine marketing experts, analytics specialists, copywriters, editors, and project managers.

The industry has simply grown so specialized, so quickly, for one person to be a master of all.

Who Succeeds the Webmaster?

When we were designing the Seven Academy full-stack web development training, the objective was clear:

Train software developers who can traverse job functions.

I have no doubt that in large organizations, there will always be room for front-end and back-end specialization.

However, according to statistics from the Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Social Economy and Handicraft (MINPMEESA), SMEs constitute 95 percent of Cameroon’s enterprises.

These SMEs will need developers who can traverse these job functions (front-end and back-end). The reason why I think full-stack web development is the path we need.
